Manning vs. Brees

But the fact is that the colts don't have much of a running game, and the team rides on the backs of Manning, Wayne and Clark.

So why wasn't the opposite taken into account all the years that Manning had a complete offense (Wayne, Harrison, Clark, Edge, Faulk) while Brady had nothing (Brown, Pattern, Caldwell, A. Smith).

Thats the annoying part of this arguement. The claim is Manning has no running game, yet for years Brady had no running game and no top receivers and he still had stats comparable to the top QBs in the league and was never talked about in the MVP race. Last season it was Manning was coming off an injury and the Colts had a bad start and once Manning started to play well, so did the Colts. Well it looks like that is the case for the Pats and Brady so far this season. So I guess we'll see if the people who vote for the MVP take that into account this season. My guess is they won't.

Would be nice if we could spell Drew's last name correct in the title

There's always been a double standard with the two and always will be. I accepted that last year when they gave Manning that BS MVP.

OK, cmon now....

Brees is good, but hes no peyton manning....

and im thinking that by the time we play th ecolts, brady will again be playing back to his old status, and be better than manning

and yea manning has increadible stats right now....but he plays his schedule....i dont see his stats being THAT much more worse against better teams....

Brees was a better QB than Manning last year, its not even that close.

We are discussing the 2009 season. Brady was indeed a better quarterback in 2003,
2004, and 2007. 2005 and 2006 are more of an argument. In any case, Brady and Manning are the top quarterbacks of the decade (superbowls 2001-2010), with Brady getting the edge because his much better play in the playoffs. I would give the regular season edge to Manning, but that doesn't matter much.

And just BTW, calling Brown and Patten nothing is just plain silly. Playing with Brady they were fine receivers. And DILLON and Smith played every bit as good as Addai and Edge in some of his years.

Dallas Clark plays great for the colts. Maybe he would be a star elsewhere; maybe not. Ditto for Wayne and Harrison. These three were great partly because they worked together many hours almost every day of the year. And how did the GREAT Edge do when he left the colts? Also, last I heard, Faulk played for us not in Mannning's complete offense.

Finally, in judging MVP quarterbacks, it is important to understand what the defense does for the team. Sometimes a quarterback needs to do more because the defense cannot be counted on. Manning has certainly been in that situation.

I think the slight advantage Manning has is that he doesn't have as strong of a running game. IIRC, Brees had the lead early on, but then had those 2 games where the RBs carried the ball a ton. Manning took a slight lead and hasn't given people a reason to doubt him yet.

Assuming neither of them flounders, and no one does anything truely remarkable (16-0, or breaks Marino/Brady's passing records), I'd hope the tie-breaker goes to Brees since he hasn't won one yet. But wouldn't mind too badly if Manning gets #4.

but you've played NO ONE this year worth mentioning except the dolphins. peyton is simply doing what he does best. pad his stats against bad teams.

Let's have this discussion again in the middle of December.

Peyton Manning: 7-8 Playoff record

yeah and some 6th rounder is 14-3

because the O line was tore up,

Cold Hard Football Facts has the Colt's Oline ranked 7th last yeear.

Football Outsiders has the Colt's pass blocking oline as the best pass blocking oline in all of the NFL last year.

1. Peterson
2. Manning
3. Brees
4. Benson

It's harder to dominate games as a RB, so when guys do it they have to figure into the discussion. While a QB should usually win MVP since it's simply the most valuable position, RBs warrant consideration when they're especially amazing.

As for Manning vs. Brees, edge has to go to Manning. Sure, Brees led a massive come-from-behind victory last week, but they only needed to come from behind because he threw three picks. So, on the whole, that game was a net-negative for Brees, IMO (though not as damaging as it could have been).
