FWIW, while posting on another forum, I ran across a USA Today article that contained this interesting tidbit:

Also Friday, the Patriots announced the signing of 10 players who weren't drafted.

They are, running backs DeCori Birmingham of Arkansas, Matt Phillips of Edinboro and Kyle Eckel of Navy; long-snapper Travis Conway from Virginia Tech; kicker Robbie Gould of Penn State; offensive linemen Ryan Krug of Connecticut and Mike Lorenz of Wisconsin; linebacker Andre Torrey of Arizona, safety Raymond Ventrone of Villanova and defensive lineman Mike Wright of Cincinnati.

Rather impressive that half of those guys were still on NFL rosters last year.

You could say Gould got away, but we all love Ste Gos

Hi Rico, and welcome to the board!

(We had a pretty good kicker at the time, I think -- sorry, can't seem to remember his name.)

Imagine if the Pats had kept Gould and let Vinatieri go at that point...

In what sense? How psychotic the reaction would be here, or the difference on the field?

Yep. Gould just got here a year early.

May nothing worse ever happen to us personnelwise than missing out on Gould and getting Adam + Gost.

Keeping Gould instead of Adam would have changed a lot of things since then.. Granted, the Pats wouldn't have Gost, but they'd have Gould and he's a damn good kicker.. and He was experienced at kicking outdoors as well.. It probably would change what this team looks like now.. at least from a draft pick standpoint.

Gostkowski has kicked 44 touchbacks in 3 seasons, while Robbie Gould has kicked 24 touchbacks in 4 seasons.

It becomes easier if you change it to "Vinatraitor."

It just occurred to me, do you think Belicheck would have kicked that field goal in the superbowl instead of going for it on 4th and 13 if Gould were the kicker? I mean he had already made the pro bowl by that time, so maybe Bill would have had the confidence in him to do it...this move could have changed the entire outcome of the perfect season and we don't even know it...and never will...

And even the ones who haven't found places in the league - Birmingham, Torrey, Krug, Lorenz - were very good value signings.

This is what can happen whenever the FO decides to become aggressive post-draft. I wish it would be this aggressive every year.

Kinda hard to be that aggressive when you draft 12 rookies. . . .
