Franchise Tenders Signed? Suggs and Peppers?

have they signed? I haven't seen anything to indicate they have. I wonder what the long wait is other than maybe their teams trying to negotiate a long term contract. I do wonder if the Pats rushed too quickly with Cassel.

I think the players that have not signed, such as Suggs and Peppers, are using that as leverage in negotiations as they seek a long-term contract.

I don't believe the Pats rushed with Cassel, because the Pats and Cassel were not going to sign a contract this year. He needed to be franchised so the Pats could proceed with finding a trade partner.

Carolina may be holding themselves up, but it's all part of negotiations. Should they simply sign Peppers to whatever he wants just for the sake of getting him signed quickly?

I am looking it at Peppers situation. If he signs then Carolina must do something because the money is guaranteed. It puts pressure on Carolina. So I wonder from a players point of view like Pepper since they are up against the cap why he doesn't just sign.

I'm fairly certain that in regards to the cap and Carolina, Peppers signing the franchise tender is irrelevant. Once Carolina franchised him, the amount of the franchise tender counts against their cap. It only changes if the player is traded or signs a new contract with the team.

From a players standpoint, not signing means he's not locked in to that one year deal. It also means he can avoid fines for not attending mandatory workouts and training camp. If a player is looking for more guaranteed money that comes with a big signing bonus and a long term deal, or a trade (as is Peppers case) they may believe the best tactic is to not sign the franchise tender.

You are correct. Carolina took the cap hit for Peppers as soon as they put the franchise tag on him. Whether or not he signs the tender is irrelevant.

Given that Peppers has publicly said he doesn't want ot play for Carolina, not signing the tender allows Peppers to retain some control over his situation. Carolina can't negotiate a trade - everything has to go through Peppers' agent. And he can keep Carolina in limbo at a huge price, knowing that at the worst he is guaranteed an enormous one year salary. Not too bad a deal.

Thats incorrect. He isn't guaranteed anything until the tender is signed, and turned in to the NFL. The panthers can revoke the tag any time before he turns it in, and he walks.

You are correct about Carolina being able to revoke the franchise tag designation if Peppers hasn't signed the tender. But if you are Julius Peppers, the Panthers revoking the tag and making you a FA is what you requested in the first place - that would essentially be Peppers' "win" scenario". Peppers as a FA would clearly get plenty of money from someone, so there's no real risk involved.

After reading that article, i think we should offer the two 2's(next years extra picks) for Suggs. The Ravens can then turnaround and give their 1st, and 3rd to Arizona for Boldin. Everybodys happy

I know the Peppers fan club wont like this, but I would personally prefer we go after Suggs. Atleast he's been productive at OLB. Peppers? who knows.
