Jim Trotter, analyzing the Chiefs' options with the third overall pick:

For the money the Chiefs will be paying, they should be bold rather than safe. The third pick overall should be an impact player, not a role player.

How can a guy who gets paid to do this get it so wrong? The last thing you do with that pick is take chances. That's what the Lions do. The Chiefs will take a nice, safe player at 3, just like the Dolphins did last year at number 1. The chances of the guy flaming out are just too high.

I know these "analysts" are in bed with agents, and that is probably driving a lot of this article, but he ignores so much. Seymour was well regarded, but a lot of people had him in the middle to lower half of the first round of the draft when he came out. BB was perceived to have reached for him

Should that Chiefs take Jackson at 3? It's either him, Raji, or an OT as far as I see it. But Trotter identifies need at WR and LB, as well as both lines. There's no way I'd draft those positions over a good lineman if I'm Pioli.

Weak team - build from line... OL or DL... screw the "experts" and go for what's useful. Guaranteed. If Curry is a lock, then that's cool... but if I were a Chief fan (other than cut myself) I'd want to do like the Pats : spend on the lines.

Why not take Monroe and be assured of a stud LT for the next 10 years?

Monroe isn't as much of a sure thing as Robert Gallery was.

And look how that turned out.

That said, I agree that using high picks on OL and DL is the smart course.

Take the best LT or NT or DE available. Don't worry if the entire world thinks you reached.

And hope he makes the transition to the pros

Gallery's kind of a recent exception, though. OT is one of the easiest positions to evaluate, so you've got a much higher percentage of getting it right.

Nolan Nawrocki from PFW agrees with you: "What has become increasingly clear, in a weak draft not featuring elite talent, however, is that NFL decision makers will have a tendency to play it safe. 'You got four first-time GMs drafting in the top five,' a longtime executive said. '"The last thing you want to do is take too much risk and bust on your first pick. I think we'll see some surprises because (teams drafting in the top five) are going to be stuck, unable to trade out, and happy to hit a double. The one thing you don't want to do is swing for the fences and strike out.' "
