Where's the love for Sintim?

He seems like the forgotten man around here recently - and in national mocks and such. I like what I've seen/read/heard of Barwin. Granted I've only seen him play once, but between the combine and scouting reports here and elsewhere, he seems like a very good Pats fit.

However, Sintim seems like a safer pick to me, and more worth the #23 if it came down to it. He has more experience, would be a quicker transition, and has proven he has the strength to play OLB or SILB for the Pats.

What's the downside with him? I know his 40 time isn't up there with Barwin and his pass rushing upside (despite his production) is not perceived on the same level as Brown, Maybin and the likes, but to me, he seems like probably the safest defensive pick the Pats could make, and the one most likely to reap benefits in 2009.

There was early affection shown for Sintim (before Barwin), and he's been consistently considered as a legitimate Pats prospect -- although he's slid some in terms of draft position.

It may be worth repeating -- so here goes:

Al Groh as we know is his HC. Groh was the Pats DC (and LB coach) when McGinest was drafted by Parcells way back when. Groh was the one who privately worked out Willie prior to him being selected. Point being, Groh knows the Pats defense, and knows LBs. His recommendation to Belichick would be the single opinion that BB trusts above all, as to whether or not Sintim can play in the Pats defense (not to mention, his character, coachability, etc.)

That said, we don't really know Groh's opinion.

Agreed. Groh's two cents will weigh heavily in whether we target Sintim.

My question then is why has Sintim slid in his draft projection? Because he was outdone at the combine?

Sintim would be a solid pick. He's clearly in the mix, he just doesn't have Barwin's incredible upsides, but no one would be crying if we ended up with him.

He seems to be falling a little because he's not a phenomenal athlete and didn't stand out at the combine, which is fine with me. I could see picking him at #47 of we can't snag Barwin earlier. He could probably play both inside and out.

He has all the qualities and talent to be a Patriots type player.

That sums it up for me, too. Sintim is the safest pick, and would almost certainly contribute well. But when a guy who looks the part on the field and acts the part off the field goes and puts up Ware/Merriman-type measurables the way Barwin did, fans naturally get stars in their eyes.

I actually see the Pats drafting Sintim at #34 to play inside alongside Mayo. At #23 I see another OLB, and would not be surprised if it is Barwin.

I'm still not sold on his ability to drop back in coverage. Does anyone have his 3-cone and short shuttle numbers??

Not yet, hopefully they'll start turning up within the next week.

I second that request (or third, after Box). He seems a bit stiff in his dropbacks, but he has a knack for getting to the passer and can keep contain to the outside. Not sure he'd work as an ILB, though.

His teammate could be an interesting and low-cost candidate for that:

Appleby sucks inside, I'd try him outside as a UDFA, just to see if he could pick things up. Sintim seems to have a decent nose for the football, I want size and strength and good hands inside, but what I really want is a pigskin seeking missle - it's such a bummer California's Anthony Felder only weighs in at 233.

Sintim ran a 4.78 40 at the combine. So his stock did not rise. He was a late 1st/early 2nd guy before anyways so I don't think he hurt himself that bad. He's just not going to excite many people with his athleticism. He has the size to translate to a decent ILB for the Pats though at 6'2 256 lbs.

I get the feeling that the Pats will get a rookie ILB we're not thinking about right now. I'm high on Jasper Brinkley, but for some reason I think NE will draft someone we're dismissing at the moment, like Darry Beckwith or somebody. :confused2:

This just seems like a "Mayo over Rivers" situation to me, except early on Day Two. Eh, it's a hunch.

Is Sintim experienced at ILB, or a project?

I like Sintim. I like him better than most picks and I think he is more ready than Barwin at this point. If he fell into our laps I'd be quite pleased. I hope the whole NFL get's down on him except the Patriot scouts so we can get him.

Barwin is just the flashier pick right now with a very tall ceiling.

Brinkley would be a wasted pick from my perspective, he may have been more athletic then expected, but that's because he it doesn't translate to the field - he just doesn't have the 'nose' for the ball I want to see in a NE ILB. Beckwith weighed in heavier then expected, but his athleticism seems very limited at that weight. The best 'nose' on the list of ILBs belongs to Scott McKillop, he just hasn't shown the stack & shed strength I'd want to see inside.

Is Sintim experienced at ILB, or a project?
Project of course, but mitigated with his 3-4 OLB experience to fall back on if he's not picking up the play inside.

What about Tyrone McKenzie? He weighed in at 246, didn't run all that well, but he seems to be around the ball all the time.

Well, Belichick's said he would have taken Vilma if he had been available. . . .

Vilma's equivalent in this draft is Casillas, whom I'm projecting to SS/tweener...not ILB (see Jesters; Mangenuis and the Vilma years).
