....here are three possible replacements outside of the organization. Nick Cesario is probably the in-house front-runner but these candidates should not be dismissed. Some have mentioned Phil Savage, although I don't think he will be the choice he still makes the list as an option.

The first option below worked w/BB in Cleveland from 1991-1995 and the 2nd is a local MA guy currently working w/Baltimore who has a lot of respect around the league and per Chris Mortensen is an option for the KC job:
Baltimore Ravens | People | George Kokinis

Baltimore Ravens | People | Eric DeCosta

Re: If Pioli does leave....

Think it will be Nick Caserio.. just a hunch.

Caserio would be the logical choice but he has very little experience

in the personel department. Savage and the two Raven's people

do have this experience. The person chosen has to oversee the

draft and negotiate rookie and free agent contracts.

My fellow Greek, George Kokinis, meets all those requirements but BB does make projections with coaches and personnel people as he does with players. Remember that Pioli didn't have that much experience back in 2000 either.

Re: If Pioli does leave....

I think Pioli will stay with a bump in pay. If not, Savage would be a surprise, given the Patriots belief in promoting from within (a lot of the time, not always), but Savage would be a WELCOME surprise.

I posted this same question deep within another Pioli thread. A number of years ago, someone with the Pats on the personnel side left to join another team in a more expanded role. I believe he went to the Eagles or the Ravens or elsewhere, I am not sure. Does anyone know. I know it was Dmitroff. Was it Andy Wasznuk (sp?)

Little only in comparison to a guy like Savage.

1999-2000 Saginaw Valley State (Graduate Assistant)
2001 Central Michigan University (Graduate Assistant)
2001 New England Patriots (Personnel Assistant)
2002 New England Patriots (Offensive Coaching Assistant)
2003 New England Patriots (Area Scout)
2004-2006 New England Patriots (Director of Pro Personnel)
2007 New England Patriots (Wide Receivers Coach)
2008- New England Patriots (Director of Player Personnel)

Too bad the Pats lost their #2 man to the Falcons.

More experience in the front office than I realized.

Charlie Casserly left us considered a top personnel guy to join the Texans.

Oh don't worry about it. Given the number of people smarter about personnel than Belichick and Pioli in every draft on this bulletin board alone, they must be a fairly large slice of the general population.

Was it Andy Wasznuk (sp?)

Just 'Googled" - Andy W. left the Pats to go to Harvard and he was more of a contract and negotiations guy. Still trying to figure out the personnel guy that left the Pats a couple of years ago - would/could he be a potential replacement?

Here's another candidate to add to the mix, again a little inexperienced and a projection but it seems as though BB goes with these type of guys:

Scout's time - Reiss' Pieces

Jay Muraco, college scouting coordinator -- A Kent State graduate, he has worked the last 11 seasons in the NFL and the last seven with the Patriots. Volunteered to work with the Browns personnel department from 1992-95 when Bill Belichick was coach.

But the more I think of it, Nick Caserio who moved to Director of player personnel early last year would be the front runner: Nick Caserio - Official New England Patriots Biography

Re: If Pioli does leave....

I agree.

The patriots don't need outside help as long as we have the Krafts, Belichick and Dante.

Think it will be Nick Caserio.. just a hunch.

I'm with that. The Pats like to stay in-house and with a position like Pioli's, an understanding of the franchise and the ability to work harmoniously with BB is paramount imho.

*Disclaimer: I don't believe Pioli's going anywhere but it's an interesting topic because it brings to light some of the basic understandings of how the Pats roll.

If Pioli goes, his position gets filled by transition rather than acquisition. jmho

I agree on both points, it doesn't seem like Pioli is going anywhere if we look at these signals, first it was reported that he was interested: Report: Scott Pioli interested in Browns' job - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com then he interviews: ESPN - Cleveland Browns talk to Eric Mangini, Scott Pioli about job openings all the while the Browns owner continues to interview candidates (4 already and counting if you count his own guy, Browns DC, Mel Tucker): ESPN - Cleveland Browns interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels

Maybe Pioli and Lerner have quietly moved on.

I also agree that IF he does go, the Pats will stay in house and go with Caserio and then maybe promote Muraco to take his spot. But it is good to look at whose out there in the league.
