If we do get a pick for Asante it will be added for the upcoming draft not next year right?

Yep, a probable third-rounder in 2009.

He was hurt this year so it may drop to a 4th.

I dont think anyone has figured out the comp selection algorithm yet

AdamJT13 has come the closest and the BIGGEST single factor is the average yearly amount of the contract. Samuel's is well above the cut off for the 3rd round. So, even being hurt, its not going to go down to a fourth.

Even though his interceptions dropped to only 4, Asante

had 22 passes defended.

Thank you BF, i just hate it when people don't back up what they say. That means we are getting a 3rd Rounder.:singing:

It means we SHOULD be getting a 3rd rounder. It all depends on the free agent signings that the Pats did and how many actually qualify for the Compensatory pick equations.

If they had more than 3 that qualify, then they won't get anything for Samuel.

Can you name 3 patriots free agents signings in 2008 that were any good?
Do UDFAs go into the equation?

Has anybody compiled a list yet of how many draft picks the Pats are going to have total this year?

I don't need to name 3 free agents that the Patriots signed that were any good. Why? Because how they performed doesn't actually matter until you get into the equation itself.

However, since its you, I decided to go through the process of making an educated guess on what the Pats comp picks would be.

Since you don't know or haven't bothered to partake in previous compensation pick discussions, UDFA do not go into the equation. The Compensatory pick equation only deals with TRUE veteran free agents. It does not cover UDFA, RFA or players cut from teams.

Here is AdamJT13's blog on compensatory picks for 2008. Its a fantastic read and people should bookmark the site.

In order to qualify for the comp equation, a player must have been a true Unrestricted Free Agent whose contract had expired or was voided after the previous season (i.e., he cannot have been released by his old team); he must sign during the UFA signing period (which ended July 22 last year); if he signs after June 1, he must have been tendered a June 1 qualifying offer by his old team; his compensatory value must be above a specific minimum amount (or, possibly, have incentives in his contract that would put him above the minimum); and he cannot have been permanently released by his new team before a certain point in the season (which seems to be after Week 10) or, possibly, before getting a certain amount of playing time, unless he was claimed off waivers by another team.

Here is the list of players the Pats signed this year:
Sam Aiken - Signed for 2 years/ 1.3 million total.
Fernando Bryant - Not eligible due to being cut by the Lions.
Deltha O'Neal - Not eligible due to being cut by the Bengals.
Tank Williams - Signed for 1 yr/ $605K.
Oliver Ross - Not eligible because he was released prior to week 10
Victor Hobson - Not eligible because he was released prior to week 10
Jason Webster - I am not sure if he is eligible or not.
Lamont Jordan - Not eligible due to being cut by the Raiders
Barry Stokes - Not sure if he is eligible or not.
Marcus Pollard - Not eligible due to being cut prior to week 10.
Anthony Clement - Not eligible due to being cut by the Jets.
John Lynch - Not eligible due to being cut by the Broncos

Now, I do not know how Tank Williams figures in since he's been on the IR all year. What I can tell you is that he signed for $605K . That is below the threshold used last year in dealing out compensatory picks. So he's unlikely to be a "qualifying player."

Sam Aiken's contract averages to be $650K per year. That is also below the threshold used last year in dealing compensatory picks. So he's unlikely to be a "qualifying player."

In theory, the Patriots should receive a comp pick for Samuel (projected to be a 3rd), for Randall Gay (projected to be a 5th due to injury) and for Donte Stallworth ( projected to be a 4th, but could fall to a 5th because of poor performance)

I don't know if Eugene Wilson is eligibile for the Compensatory pick equation because he was signed by Tampa, cut by Tampa before the season started and then signed by the Texans in between weeks 3 and 4.

Please note that the Patriots DID sign 4 players who could be eligible. My guess is that they won't be, but you never can tell with Roger Goodell.

1st round - Pats
2nd round - SD
2nd round - Pats
3rd round - Pats
3rd round - Comp
4th round - Pats
5th round - Pats
5th round - Comp
5th round - Comp
6th round - Pats
7th round - Pats.

Please note, the comp picks are only my projections based on AdamJTs postings from previous years. Though it is unlikely, there could be as many as 4 players that the Patriots signed who could be qualifying signings and would wipe out the comp picks.

Please also note that the Patriots may or may not receive a comp pick for Eugene Wilson.

Does the fact that we cut Webster and then later re-signed him factor in at all? I sort of doubt he counts toward compensation picks...but you never know. Same goes for Stokes. If guys like that cost us compensation picks, I'd probably vomit in my mouth. I don't think they do, of course I'm no expert. Even Tank Williams, I'd have to imagine those vet min type salaries do not count against compensatory picks.

I personally think its lame that the quality of the free agents only matter if the # of free agents lost outweighs the # of free agents gained. But thats the way it is.

Does the fact that Wilson was cut by the Bucs factor into whether we receive compensation for him, or if he counts towards compensation? I would think not, ultimately, we lost him as a free agent and he played for a team and contributed to that team. He went on to start for the Texans, 63 TCKLs and 2 INTs. If he counts, that is huge, b/c with 4 free agents counting - I'd feel pretty safe about us being awarded compensatory picks.

BradyManny - My answer for your questions is the same as I said in my post. I don't know.

You're missing the 2 first rounders for Cassel

So if Brady is ready to go, we could have two picks easily for Matt Cassel (not sure both would be in the first round). That would mean we could potentially have 11 picks in the first five rounds. Wow.

I think we may trade some picks for Nnamdi Asomugha.

I don't. Al Davis isn't trading with the Patriots again. The Senile old man still thinks its 2002 and that the Raiders just lost the Snow Bowl...

Also, between this year and next, the Pats have 29 players who are UFA and 15 players who are RFA. Some of those players won't be back. The Pats need to ensure that they have players in the pipeline to cover the ones they think won't be back.

Actually, if the Pats were to receive 2 first rounders for Cassel, which they won't, it would be in consecutive years. Not the same year.

And I counted what I believe the Patriots will have based on comp picks.

In another thread, I wrote:

Tank Williams and Lewis Sanders both qualify for vet minimum exemptions, so I am about 95% certain that neither of them will count against the Patriots. Webster and Aiken might qualify, but even they are 'bubble' cases.

Looking more closely, I now see the Falcons released Sanders, so he wouldn't count. Webster's contract was large enough that it might qualify, but I'll agree that I'm simply not sure if he counts.

Barry Stokes should not count, as he was signed after the FA signing period ended. For the same reason, O'Neal is actually doubly ineligible--he was signed too late, and, as DaBruinz noted, the Bengals cut him.

The good news, though, is that all the Pats' signings were relatively low-level signings, so they will cancel from the bottom up, if they cancel at all.

A conservative estimate, IMO, would be a 3 for Samuel, and a 5 for Stallworth.

The best we can hope for, IMO, is a 3 for Samuel, a 4 for Stallworth (his contract would have made him the highest 4 last year), and a 5 for Gay. [If I had to guess, I'd say Wilson simply will not count; at best, he'd earn a 7.]
