Where is Cassel's most likely landing spot in 2009

Re: Where does Cassel go?

IMO, Belichick will probably give the same advice to Cassel that he did to Mangini. Hopefully, for Cassel's sake, he takes it (and I think he will). There are a lot of places in the NFL where a talented young guy can make a name for himself. in NY, with the Jets, is not one of them. That organization is a circus, and it's only a matter of time before you get blamed for its problems.

I don't really think it's analogous at all. I was always under the impression that BB's thought in that case was that Mangini was simply not ready to be a head coach anywhere, but especially not in the pressure cooker of New York. Obviously, this belief was borne out.

I think this season pretty much proved that Matt is ready to be an NFL QB, so it's a pretty dissimilar situation.

Not to mention that a coach can coach into his 60s whereas Cassel has, at most, a ten year window left.

Is that necessarily the case? Given his relative inexperience as a starter, is it at least possible that his body might be able to absorb the hits that come with being a QB better than if he had been a starter all these years? [I simply don't know.]

I doubt it. And if so, the difference would be negligible.

I don't know for sure but we know he's 26 and very few athletes play beyond 40. He has a far more limited career as a QB than Mangina did as a coach.

If he doesn't stay here, Tampa. Grudens love of Quarterbacks (if he's still there) and Garcia is more than likely done. They need to plug some holes but they could be a good team if they sort it.

I would not be at all surprised to see Matt Cassel in a Patriots uniform next year. He is the ultimate insurance policy at this point, just in case.

I think you are right........With all the reports swirling around out there that Brady is going to need another knee surgery and may "miss the 2009 season" per ESPN....He (cassel) may not be going anywhere. That having been said, they (Pats) may strike while the iron is hot and trade him while he has the most value...but then would have to bring in someone else....because I doubt Okee will be ready....It will be interesting.......

I think detroit's franchise is in such a bad state, qb is too big of a gamble at 1 overall.
Go the Miami model and try to build up both lines. Get a qb whom is ready immediately.
Plus, he isn't that old. I would take their 2nd rounder. 33 for M.Cassel. Gives them a
chance to get a couple of linemen. Say, A.Smith - T - Alabama. And, a pass-rusher
Selvie or E.Brown with Dallas pick.

You are smoking way too much rope if you think that you could get an Andre
Smith with Detroits second round pick. It would take Detroit's first and and even KC's second pick might not be high enough. He might well be the first pick in the draft.

If Cassel went to Detroit that is why I would demand the first pick. And then give them our second or third round pick.

Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogdens don't come along but once a decade.

Unless we get some crazy contract (low salary this year, lots of guaranteed money in salary down the road), it's just not realistic for Cassel to be here. We'd be looking at close to $30M in QB cap space. I have little doubt we'll trade Cassel, sign a veteran as insurance and have Brady, O'Connell, veteran going into camp.
