SF wasn't the only other team interested in drafting Mankins

Just found this in a book I saw at a used bookstore, The Draft by Pete Williams:

White was the last player on McKay's hot list. Had White been gone [at #27] and had he been unable to trade down, he would have taken Southern Cal defensive tackle Mike Patterson, or Logan Mankins, a guard from Fresno State. Those players were the last two picks of the first round, going to Philadelphia and New England.

McKay is Rich McKay, the president/former GM of the Atlanta Falcons.

:nono: We know better, some of our most befuddled members assure us Mankins was a wasted pick at #32 because their draft site of choice had him as a third round value.

this kind of stuff brings to mind a more interesting question:

who has BB/SP really wanted and just missed out on or couldn't quite trade up for?

never heard any reliable insight into this but names like Weddle, Olsen, CLong come to mind.

I never doubted the pick, mostly because I don't doubt any pick that SP/BB make, but if I had I don't think the fact that the Atlanta Falcons wanted the guy would ease my concern at all.

Yeah, Mankins still wouldn't have been able to protect Vick from being stupid.....

I always take the "we would have drafted" and the "so-n-so was our first choice" talk with a huge grain of salt.

Well, FWIW, according to Reiss, a trade was in the works so the Pats could get Zackary Bowman this year, and they apparently were big on Stewart Bradley, too, but couldn't get up before the Iggles drafted him.

You must stop mentioning this name. I'm still in recovery.

In the "everybody said it was a wasted pick" vein, I'm sad to see that Condraft has carefully erased all traces of their tirade against Scott Pioli's wild arrogance for spending a 7th-round pick on an obviously worthless QB who never even played in college, just because SP "wanted to look smarter than everybody else."

Mankins was a different story -- obviously talented, obviously a good fit for a position the Patriots desperately needed to fill. Plenty of us liked him, but none of us had the vision to say "oh, if he's the player who will help the Patriots most at #32, maybe they should take him at #32." Which is why SP really is smarter than us.

Exactly, Patchick.
