I know it's still to early to know for sure, but at this point would you rather take that trade with the 9ers back and take Woodley or Harris? I was one that was in the Woodley camp (big time). I know others in here were big David Harris fans. Our pass rush (without scheming) has been pretty pathetic for some time and I feel that Woodley really could have helped there. Personally, I think I might take Woodley over Mayo right now (with a move of Adalius back inside).

Still pretty early like you mentioned, as great as Harris was last year, thus far he has yet to really be that playmaker or enforcer he showed last year. All 3 are fine young LB's, now that Vernon Gholston patience is a virtue

We could have had both last year. Thats what I was hopeing for at the time.

It's Jerod Mayo, not Jarod. You would've thought we'd be good at this after having Je'Rod Cherry.

If you are going to undo drafts, that is pretty weak. How about if we took Jerry Rice instead of Trevor Matich? Or Marino instead of Eason? Alan Faneca and Jeremiah Trotter instead of Tebucky Jones and Rod Rutledge? Jason Taylor instead of Cris Canty? Darren Woodson instead of Eugene Chung? and on and on.

uh Jerod Mayo is going to be an all-pro linebacker for years here. sometimes I wonder about some of you. David Harris is nothing special, and Jerod Mayo is starting, and playing quite well, in his first year in a complicated defense.

paint chips. i blame lead, i really do.

my NFL past doenst go so far back...but should the last sentece be the other way around?

nothing special:
Harris 07' - (15 Games, 8 Starts) 115 Tackles, 4 Sacks, 2 Forced Fumbles, 0 INT, 1 Pass Def

Lets see Mayo do that year one

Whilst I disagree with the previous posters comments about Harris (who I rate highly and would argue was the real DROTY last year), those stats aren't impossible to match or at least get near. Indeed, in terms of tackles, he's around a 5th of the way there already. Thing is though, Harris was the standout player on a pretty poor front 7 last year, and was able to make those tackles because no-one else had. Not a criticism of him, but in a better D, he probably wouldn't have made all those tackles. And yes I am aware they're from about 10 games and not 16.

Personally I hope he doesn't have to make that many tackles. He's looked very good so far though. It says a lot that's he's played every single down, which I think makes him the only player on the front 7 (maybe the entire D?) to do so.

Draft mistakes are made all the time so I think it's a little silly to have draft threads a year and more after drafts, but I don't think passing on either of those 2 for Mayo were the mistakes.

The 9ers trade was great and the Mayo pick looks great. I'd be questioning taking Meriweather over those 2, not Mayo or the trade, in hind sight. I still haven't been all that impressed with Meriweather's play and if I were offered Mayo or Meriweather, I'd take Mayo every time.

Those stats really don't mean much. Mayo clearly played better in weeks 1 and 2 than he did last week, yet he ended up with 12 tackles last week compared to something like 13 combined the prior 2 weeks. It's easy to pile up tackles 7+ yards down the field when your run defense sucks (and causes the other team to keep running) like the Jets run D did last year and the Pats did against Miami.

I happen to think David Harris is a very good player, but you can't tell whether a LB is good or not from his stats, especially when he's on a defense that's horrible against the run--it's easy to pile up tackles that way.

Willis already has a C on his chest.... pretty impressive.

damn you why did you and Brit Pat have to be the buzz kill. Harris did pile up tackles b/c of the pouros D but he is a great tackler and big hitter. He only has above average speed but he is a very good blitzer and good at taking on blockers. When I see Mayo I see a playmaker. The stories of the kids work ethic are exactly what you look for in a football player especially at ILB/ QB of the D.

Jerod Mayo is a good choice for this team, for those of you who want to compare stats to other rookies.. it is like comparing raisins and grapefruit, there have been articles published as to how these stats, particularly tackling stats, are arrived at.. that they are largely done by the franchise and not by the NFL or another objective source.

In this D, which is not stat driven, have to be careful when a player is compared to another player from another team.. comparing the impact of Willis in SF last year to Mayo in NE this year does not work, Willis is a big cog in that wheel.. Mayo does not need to have as big an impact as he is surrounded by quality players..

Woodley is a beast...different type of linebacker.
I think Mayo will be incredible...but wish we had drafted Woodley when we had the cahnce.

Mayo is playing better then all defensive rookies right now in my biased opinion. If he can keep this pace up he would definitively be a better pick then Woodley or Harris.

I have to disagree completely. As a Patriot fan living in NYC, unfortunately I get stuck watching Jets games, and believe me when I say, David Harris is a stud ! He was a stud the minute they put him in their lineup. He has been playing at a high level from game one. I really like Jerod Mayo (may get his jersey when I come to Boston in a couple of weeks), but don't belittle David Harris just because he's a Jet, he is a helluva player. He would have been a perfect pick for the Pats in 07, and the minute we passed on him, I knew we made a huge mistake. In hindsight, if we picked Harris last year, we might have picked a DB or OL this year @ #7 (or #10), both being major weaknesses right now.

We got the 7th pick... traded down for the 10th and also got an extra 3rd... traded that 3rd for San Diegos 2nd rounder this year.

So we really got the 10th overall pick (Mayo) AND a 2nd round pick in 2009

Meriweather is starting to look pretty damn good out there too.

2 key INT's that sparked our defense.

Woodley looks awesome in the Steelers system... but who would he be starting over in NE? Definately not Thomas or Vrabel.

It's better that we got a project in Crable who can sit on the bench a wait a few years. Someone like Woddley was ready to contribute right away and wouldnt be happy riding the pine.
