I was looking at that pick that Tedy made versus the Dolphins in the snow game (somebody here has the pic in his sig file) and it struck me that he would be no lock to start on this team. What an odd moment. That pick was one of my favorite moments of all time. The guy that made it may not be able to start on this team? This team with this "crappy" defense?

I just can't see him (rather small) beating Spikes and Hightower on the inside. Given the size/athletic advantages of Spikes and Hightower, I can't find the argument to make on behalf of Tedy except that he was good in coverage, was smart, opportunistic, etc. But dominant like what I see once Hightower learns the ropes? I don't see that in Tedy.

Tedy was a smart play caller but I think Hightower has all of that and more.

I think Tedy was a superior third down ILB but I'm not sure he could start and be an every down ILB here.

I suppose we have to account for Mayo as well. If Bill wanted to fiddle by swapping Hightower and Mayo then Tedy would be competing with Mayo. I don't see it working for Tedy there either.

Or am I missing something about Tedy?

If you check the draft forum back to last January, I was talking up Hightower all along. When Pitt went with Deangelo I was screaming for the Patriots to move up and take him. I was elated when they did.

Having said that, I find it absurd for anyone to make the leap that Hightower, who has yet to take an NFL snap, IS better than Tedy.

I hope that 5 years from now we can all say that Hightower is as good or better than Tedy.

But for now this thread screams to go the Practice Squad forum.

    Will anyone second that motion?

I'd kinda prefer to see what comes of this thread. Let nature take its course!

2001-2004 prime Tedy Bruschi would absolutely start on this team.

I would not make this argument for Chandler Jones over Willie. There's a reason for that and a reason why I picked Tedy and Hightower. Basically it's that Hightower is a specimen with all of the attributes of speed and size over Tedy. He just stood up Gronk and pushed a FB back into the face of a coach. Let's just be honest that Tedy never did that. That is a physical fact that cannot be escaped.

I did conditionialize my statement with "when Hightower learns the ropes" too. That is quite important. If feel like you dissed that - blew it off.

Run stopping: Hightower. Rushing the passer: Hightower. Coverage: Tedy. Who is the starter?

Pre-stroke, Bruschi would absolutely start on this defense. Not even really a question, he'd easily start in any defense where Spikes starts, and at his best he was better than Mayo. He could also play either ILB spot, although he was at his best as WILB. Post-stroke, maybe not.

Even if he's not good enough to start at linebacker, he probably could at safety.

Nathan, would you start that Tedy over a young Ray Lewis?

That's where I'm goin' with this.

Nobody wants to say that they think we have another Ray Lewis right? I get that.

    But we do.

Great video. Hard to argue with. He played with heart.

But I will: Did you see how many highlights were picks? I will give him that. I already gave him that as an advantage over Hightower. He had great hands and instincts in coverage.

I thought these threads would stop when TC started. While we're at it, would Moss start on this team? :bricks:

Interestingly enough wasn't there a similar question asked by some? It went more along the lines of who on this current D could start on the last decade Ds.
