As I get ready to go play a round of golf, I have gone over the roster and am having a hard time cutting to 53. Each year there seems to be a surprise cut and someone makes the 53 who was not generally expected to.

My surprise cut is Izzo. Not that I think he's not worthy to make the team but if we don't cut him, we will have to cut one younger more promising players.

    Who is your surprise cut?

I don't know about that one. He still seems to be hugely effective in special teams. I can't see him being gone. But I've been wrong before.

Not sure if this would qualify as a shocker, but I wouldn't be surprised if O'Callaghan got the axe. His inability to play LT and a history of stingers/concussions(?) are not qualities for our swing tackle. Can Britt play LT in a pinch ? Kaczur can move to LT, if necessary. It might allow them to keep one of their draftees (Oldenburg) on the active roster.

Though you could file this one under "already a done deal", I'll post it anyway because I'd never of thought it at the beginning of TC and we all kinda watched it happen before our eyes.

Mills is GONE............... Rivers came in and STOLE his spot.

Again, no surprise from the last couple weeks, but coming into the season to now, I think it is. Its weird to think that, giving his draft spot that they'd give up on him so quick.

Huh? Why would you cut a guy who was probably our second best LB last year?

    Don't fib. It wasn't completely a joke.

Has Colvin been a nice player for us? Yes?

Does he warrant his salary......????????????? That one keeps me up at night.

So we are going to cut OCallaghan who was starting as a rookie, and shows great promise and would without a doubt be the first man off the bench in order to keep a late round draft pick? OCallaghan was last years draft pick, and was a successful pick.
All this because you dont want to move your RT to LT if there is a LT injury?

What do you do if you cut O'C and a T gets hurt? Throw the 6th round draft pick who has shown nothing in there?

Of course that qualifies as a shocker. You dont cut your 6th best OL to keep a project around.

Bam Childress or Kevin Kight will make the roster over a guy like Kelley Washington or Reche Caldwell. Too much versatility and youth. What's the point in keeping Washington or Caldwell to be our #5 and #6 WRs (and that's before Brown and Jackson come back) when they're going to be gameday inactives?

Well, I did say "But not this year". Meaning that maybe he'll be a salary cap victim down the road.

But I do love Colvin and hope he's here for a very long time.

We all want to be conterversial but the truth is with the way the roster has been analyzed I don't think any real surprises will occur.

It is really a bunch of guys fighting for the final spots.

Colvin, IMO, is one of the most underrated players on this team. When he came here he was considered (and had been) a pass rusher who was just so-so vs the run. In his time here he has become one of the top run defenders at the OLB position in the NFL.
Those who like to tape and rewatch the game, check out Colvin's run D. He does a great job of taking on and shedding the blocker. Our D isn't designed for you to make tackles on plays run toward your hole. It is designed to do what Colvin does, own that 2 gap area and force the play to where it wasn't designed to go.
Thats the key to our run D. When you see RBs bouncing to holes the play wasnt designed for, or continuing outside all the way to the sidelines, we are owning that teams run offense. Colvin does a tremendous job of controlling his blocker and forcing the play somewhere else.

As the season progresses, I think the "Adalius Thomas effect" wil start benefitting Colvin in a big way.

I do expect a great year from him.

I'm going to guess Randy Moss will be the surprise cut. He's more hurt then people think and the Patriots let him walk and sign on with some other team say like the Titans?

Sounds like a stretch but it's just a guess.

I expect a great year from our LBs as a group.

We have more versatility than I've ever seen. Thomas and Vrable can play inside or outside at the drop of a hat. All 5 top LBs are effective both in pass rushing or coverage.

With Thomas able to play ILB, OLB, DE or even a SS-type role, we can play the same 11 guys, and play 4-3, 3-4, or nickel out of the same personell. On top of that, we can move LBs around to different spots to create more confusion of where we are coming from.
Basically in the 3-4 one of the LBs is a 'designated pass rusher' on any given play, without a blitz. Many 3-4 teams have one guy who rushes every play. More than ever we could bring anyone from anywhere as the 4th rusher, and not create issues. Whichever one rushes is a good pass rusher, and whichever 3 are in coverage are good in coverage.

Keeping him in 2008 costs us $5.5M. If he experiences any significant drop off this season from his 2006 level, I think we cut him. (If he plays at or close to his 2006 level, I agree that we keep him).

[Yes I know that the original poster was joking. I am not.]

    Disable Jersey

You could be correct. As much as I like Washington and especially Caldwell, their cost next season exceeds their value. And we've learned that the Pats employ a value based system. The Childresses and Kights have shown that they're better players this season than last year such that they easily meet the minimum quality for the 5 and 6 spots.

I'm glad I'm not making the cuts.
