It's not out of the question that Hoyer could stay as a longer term backup (getting a pay increase) and Mallett gets traded. Mallett's trade value will be up solely by not getting in personal trouble this season (assuming nothing happens between now and then).
After Luck, RGIII and Barkley it's not a strong QB draft and no-one after those three can touch Mallett's upside or the value of him having been with the Patriots for a year.
I would expect to tender Hoyer at the #2 level and trade him for somewhat less than that if we trade him.
If we keep Hoyer I would expect the Patriots phone to be ringing once the top three QB have gone with Mallett being the subject.
