Ultimate Betrayal: Troy Brown visiting Jets

Re: Ultimate Betrayal: Troy visiting Jets

It's a business. The Pats aren't showing loyalty to Troy by keeping him around another year when he wants to play; why should he show loyalty to us?

I love the guy, and it always amuses me when people get angry with a player for wanting to get a decent paycheck. It's not like he's Ty Law, saying one thing and doing another. All we heard was a report from 'sources' that said he wouldn't consider teams playing the Pats, nothing from Troy's mouth. And if the Jets want to pay him, good for him and good for them.

Yeah it sucks, but like I said, it's a business. Troy will retire a Patriot. I think that much is clear.

Also, without being too corny, I think people underestimate how competitive these guys are.

I've seen plenty of players walk away from millions when they could have rode the bench because they thought they were done. I'm talking about teams trying to talk them into coming back for one more.

Sure, Troy's not playing for free, but I'll guarantee he wants to play some ball and go out on a good note, not on a punt in the face mask.

These guys that are smart have money invested. It's about giving all you've got anf going out on a high note.

We have all had moments of temporary insanity.

This is Troys ... but let's be serious here. The Jets are under
extreme pressure to put the heat on us and signing Troy is regressing
not progressing ... if he signs there he's getting used and that's disrespectfull to Troy ... we'll see how it plays out.

Troy will always be one of my favorite all time Patriots and I do wish he would hang it up because I really don't want to see a shell of his former self out there being a fourth WR for another team. But I can't blame the guy if he wants to work and the Jets are willing to give him a job.

As much as I want to agree with you, I think Brown and Mangini are close and Brown may actually want to play for him if the Pats don't want him and Mangini may actually value Brown's veteran leadership and understanding of what he is trying to do especially with a war with Coles not on the too distance horizon.

I don't think Mangini thinks Troy will help on the field, but he might help in the lockerroom or class room.

I hope Troy Brown signs with the Jets. That will ensure the Pats don't waste a roster spot on him for the 4th consecutive year. He was finished in 2005, when his fumbled punt vs Denver cost the Pats the game. He should have got his pink slip then. Only a sentimental streak from Pats ownership and coaches kept him around so long.

Not like he forced the game saving fumble after Brady was picked off against the 14-2 Chargers in San Diego in 2006....
Unfortunately the play that I can't erase came a week after the SD game saving play when Troy had that illegal block called on him on what was a first down pass to Watson in the first half vs. Indy. No penalty = almost a guaranteed win. I remember all the great times with Troy and wish I could just have that one memory erased - but it stays there.

Regarding the thread, the Patriots have moved on so Troy should go where it makes the most sense for him.

Its just the jets going to stick it to us.. I dont think they have a use for him.. Then again we dont either, but its time to cut ties... We cant be upset that Troy wants to play, who can blame him.. It will hurt to see him in Jets Green, but if he still wants to play I hope its for Cleveland..

This hurts. Would Troy still be remembered as Mr. Patriot if he signs with the Jets?

I hope he said yes just for the free hotel room / meal / trip.

If he can pass a physical he would be the 53rd man on my roster til he failed the physical. He brings all those intangibles to the table:flexibility, big game experience, sure hands and intelligence. If he was here for STs only....he has to be better than Aiken in BB's system, has to be! Maybe he wants more than the veteran minimum, maybe he didnt pass the physical, maybe he lost it in practice or maybe he he said the wrong thing.....He is our own #80, and has made so many plays, done so much for the team that I would have let him start as a player/coach....There has to be something more to this that we dont know.....this isnt simply a football decision.

Oh come on. How can you call it an ultimate betrayal when your employer says we are not going to renew your contract. If the Pats don't want Troy Brown to go elsewhere, then they either have to offer him a contract or make him a coach. If he wants to play, but they don't want him, they have no right to tell him where to go (and certainly us fans have no right after all he's done for us). While I hope he doesn't go to the Jets, I can't begrudge him an interview if he still wants to play.

I don't begrudge my favorite alltime Pats player. The man is looking for a job. Good luck Troy and PS, I don't fear the Jest.

Last year we foolishly wasted a roster spot on Troy that could have been for a developmental young TE, LB, OL, whatever. Troy's strong and even mediocre years are way past now. I don't fault him for exploring his options, even with the hated and despised Jets, given that he must feel he still wants to play NFL ball. He played for value to the home team dollars; it's not like he was making the $8M a year that Asante & Ty pulled in. Like players before him, he'll come back next year, sign a 1 day contract and retire a well loved Patriot.

You know what? Even if he does sign with the Jets, I'll always be a Troy Brown fan. He's meant so much to this franchise that you can't take that away just because he signs with the enemy toward the end of his career. I would rather he doesn't take their offer, but if he does, good for him.

Just another athlete who doesn't know his time is up. He could not make the lineup last year you'd think he would retire gracefully but instead it looks as though the hero will have to be dragged kicking and clawing out of the arena. Never to be heard from again.

If he wants to kick and claw then why not the Raiders for cripes sake!!!

Maybe if we could invent a new position for him, like "interception returner tackling specialist" he could hang on a few more years. :bricks:

That's the spirit!

"As much as I hate this, he still wants to put more money away for later, who can blame him for that? I LOVE Troy, and hate the Jets with a passion, but in the same token, I understand, this is a business, and at the end of the day, if he can earn $$$$ with the Jets, then so be it, as much as it sucks!"

I agree but the sad part is he doesn't have much left to give. If the Jets are bring him in that's one less spot for a more talented player imo/.

Troy has always been a personal favorite of mine, but his time may be past. While you would like to see him retire with the Pats,
Nah. he'll still retire a Patriot. He'll come back on a one-day contract and retire.

Hate to see him in Jet Green, but to be honest, I will probably stop hating Jets while he is there.

Once he leaves, I can go back to despising the Jets. And I can still hate the Raiders all the time. Glad he isn't going there.

Well this hurts to wake up to. But I can't blame the man if he still wants to play. At least he didn't do it in his prime, a la Curtis Martin.

Just because a player can't make out lineup doesn't mean he has to retire. Our lineup is pretty damn good. Especially at WR last year. Veterans also have a place on developing teams to be a locker room presence, like WMG did for RAC in Cleveland.

Plus, even for players well past their prime, for many guys, playing football is still what they do, how they think of themsleves. O.T.I.S started 16 games for the Lions after we cut him. Not just the Pats, either. Namath played for the Rams after the Jets, and post 49er Montana played two years with the Chiefs.

Who can blame them for wanting to play?

Follow your bliss, I always say!

Whatever happens we should all have Troy's back. He's done so much for this organization and deserves our support. It'd be sad to see him go, but it is what it is. More power to him if he can get a big paycheck with some other team. I'm sure that Troy's heart will always be in NE. God bless T. Brown.
