It now seems smart that BB picked up all of those tight ends the last few years...he'll need them to play a lot moar now.

If Gronk can't stay healthy and Hernandez won't be available long-term, what are the team's options with their contracts with minimal impact on the salary cap?

It doesn't seem any "smarter" today than it was when he signed them, for the simple reason that the did not know at the time he would not have AHern and Gronk in 2013 (if that is what pans out). Same as saying how stupid it was not to sign Welker for the same reason.

As for the TE, if we are thinking about AHern replacements, I prefer to think in terms of roles rather than positions. His roles can be filled by WRs, TEs, and FBs, for instance, albeit none with his versatility.

It is a 90-man roster in the off season. I wonder if anybody that brings up the question of 'why are the Patriots signing so many (fill in the position)' that seems to crop up every year realize that?

Jason does a pretty good job of explaining it here:

Looking at the Contracts of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez - Over the Cap

Rob Gronkowsi signed an extension in 2012 that contained about $13.2 million in full guarantees and another $5 million guaranteed for injury only. His cap numbers the next two seasons are very manageable at $2.75 and $5.4 million, neither of which rank in the top 10 of the position. His salary is fully guaranteed in 2014. The protection for the Patriots comes in 2015. Gronkowski’s base salary is guaranteed for injury only in 2015 and does not vest to a full guarantee until the 5th day of the 2015 League Year.

Gronk starts season on PUP, AHern on retired/suspended/jailed list and our active tight ends will be Ballard, Hooman and Fells/Sudfeld.

The Hernandez situation appears to be heating up on many fronts between problems in local clubs, a shooting and a homicide investigation. Is it inconceivable that AH might be unavailable in the future. If so, the team has a problem with two big contracts: one that can't stay out of trouble; another that cannot stay healthy. At this junction, this is what the thread title- The Tight End Situation -means to me. And, let's factor in that the team strategised by having these guys in the lineup; putting out two big contracts.

In my opinion, the TE situation that appeared solid is falling apart. Perhaps, the others will step up? We'll see. However, having AH and Gronk in the lineup on a steady/regular basis seems to be far-fetched at this point in time.

Cool we go from the best tight ends in the game to 4 tight ends who had 11 catches between them last season

Hernandez isn't even really a tight end, he was the team's #1 receiver. And this was a receiving corps that could ill-afford to lose anyone, because now you have a couple injury prone guys, a couple rookies, and a bunch of bad veterans

Great but aside from Sudfeld who is an undrafted rookie those other guys are all veterans

Tell Russ Francis & Ben Coates to jack up on some high octane juice lickety split and report to training camp. Problem solved.

    Current TE Depth Chart:

    Inline TE
    Jake Ballard
    Michael Homanawanui
    Zach Sudfeld

    Move TE
    Daniel Fells
    Brandon Ford

I can see Sudfeld making Hoomanawanui expendable, especially once Gronk is able to play.

As for the other spot, hopefully Fells is more injury-free than he was last year.

Ok, show me proof of this happening, oh wait. There is none! Just pure nonsense.

Well, if our receivers start looking like a bunch of blind mice in the preseason, I hope we have Brandon Lloyd and Deion Branch on speed-dial. They may not be anything special, but they at least know the offense.

And you really think they will pup Gronk especially with what we assume will happen with AH?

    Is Dallas Clark an option?

I know word on the street is he might retire but if I am in the Patriots FO I am bringing him in for a look. a reliable veteran TE

Maybe they morph Tebow into a hybrid TE/FB...for blocking?

I highly doubt it. I would think that every one of the five other tight ends as well the two fullbacks on the roster who have been playing tight end (or FB) for years are much more capable and far more productive in that role.

I think we are premature in assuming Gronkowski will start the season
on Reserve/PUP. The back operation was a routine, one hour procedure.

This offense to me is a heavily run based offense anyways. With the luxury of RB's Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden and LeGarrett Blount back there should be a lot of pressure taken off of the receiving corps to began with. That alone can be a lot of production moving the chains. Lets not forget none of us know how they are going to use Tim Tebow who is a good football player and does have strengths and God given attributes. And what bad veterans? Most of these guys played on bad to average offenses with no quarterbacks to catch from... who did Michael Jenkins have? Willie Ponder? Michael Vick? still had a decent career and is looking really strong in camp and now gets to catch passed from Tom Brady. Lets remember this vet has nice size, the experience and has been around the block. He can really help WR's coach Brian Daboll teach these young guys a thing or two. Donald Jones showed flashes, particularly against us and needs to be given a chance with a good quarterback throwing him the ball, well in this case him having a great quarterback with a way better offensive around him. As far as the rookies, I keep saying it but they are a different breed then drafts past for the Patriots, and offer more then recent WR picks both physically, versatility, and mentally since the days when we drafted David Givens and Deion Branch. Who knows how good they can be, but if you trust any coach or mind in football, you trust Bill Belicheck and his staff .. Josh McDaniels, WR's coach Brian Daboll (SB years) and definitely the guy pulling the trigger himself .. the Great Tom Brady. Tom never need superstars, just guys that can catch the ball... Like Danny Amendola, who if he does stay healthy can be made into a star, especially being the fact that he has better attributes then Wes at this point in his career, and is more accomplished then Wes is when he first came to NE from MIA. And last but not least to address the tightends, yes loosing to two best TE's in the league hurts but maybe its a blessing in disguise. I think that Ballard has what it takes to be a very good tightend in the league, which he showed when he was healthy to the entire world and that rookie Zach Sudfield can bring a lot to the table, but that remains to be seen. Just have to say opmtistic.

If Gronk & AHern are out for the start of the season, I don't see many 2 TE sets -- the reason we have had 2 TE sets is cause we had two dominant TEs; not because 2 TEs are the way to go. If we had 2 Randy Mosses & Welker, we'd be going 3 wide every play.

That said, this could be Tebow's chance to get playing time if he can show some TE ability

The more I think abut it the more it makes total sense . Dallas Clark would be a perfect answer , heck he would be good in the slot forget traditional TE

Well if you are a NYG Fan, the NY sports media or the football media actually having back surgery is pretty routine. I mean at least that's what they said about Pierre-Paul's back surgery. They all have him starting Week 1.
