Evidently the Waiver period begins today. I'm not sure where we line up in the claiming line-up, but do you think anyone noteworthy will be cut? Do you think the Pats will make use of their improved claiming spot over last year?

    #24 Jersey

Are teams able to make waiver claims in February?

I wouldn't mind seeing Dan Campbell come in for a look. He's a pretty solid blocker and depth at TE has been weak since Graham left town.

There were all kinds of rumors that Jacksonville was going to cut Mike Peterson this offseason. I think he'd make a nice 2 down run stopper.

Leigh Bodden sounds very intriguing of all the affordable options.

Before the Patriots start sorting thru other teams discards,

they should make their mind up which of their own RFAs

and UFAs they want to retain. As soon as free agency begins,

there are new markets in Kansas City and Denver for players who

have played in the Patriot's system. A couple of contracts could

be tweaked to create a little salary cap space and re-sign Heath

Evans, Lonnie Paxton, and Jabar Gaffney, and tender Pierre

    Woods.

Waivers are a non-issue for the majority of players that will be available.

First, the only players that will have to go through waivers rather than immediately becoming free agents are players with less than four years of service time.

Second, the contract and cap hit often has a lot to do with a player being cut at this time of year. The team picking up that player would probably want to sign him to a lower, more cap-friendly contract rather than to his existing contract.

Waiver claims are more often made in training camp or in the first couple weeks of the season, often involving practice squad players. Right now the big date on the calendar is February 27, the start of free agency.

Last time I discussed grabbing anyone at work, I had to have a conversation with the HR department. So I think I will sit this thread out.

Hehe, I hear that. Err... no I don't.

Ok, so if a player like Bodden is claimed off Waivers is he guaranteed the remnant of his existing contract with his current team?

Bodden has more than three years of service so he doesn't go through waivers; he's a free agent. By being released his old contract is over with and done.

If the Raiders cut Michael Huff, for example, he would have to clear waivers before becoming a free agent. However, if a team did claim him off waivers then they would assume his current salary. If nobody makes a waivers claim, then he's becomes a free agent; he's free to negotiate any contract with any team, and that team is not bound to honor his former contract.

Okay a few principles to keep this thread rolling. These principles are age-old, but if you like you can now add "...now that Scott Pioli is gone" to add that air of, well, watching sportscenter now and then.

    1) Nobody in the actual front office has a clue what they are doing, once a move IS made

    2) The Front Office is incapable of doing simple math (or complex contracts.)

    3) Year after year they refuse to draft or pick up in FA a tall cornerback. A really tall cornerback. He can have two bum knees and run the 40 in 5.4, but a tall cornerback is essential. How can anybody like any cornerback we currently have? It boggles the mind.

    4) Any player at any position cut by another team is better than any player at that position the Pats have until extensively proven otherwise, at which time their value becomes equal, and the remaining Patriot somehow becomes worth two first round picks to some other team, while the FA is available free when we pick him up.

    5) Players from other teams and other cities who have never set foot in Boston will take a "hometown discount" to play for the Pats.

    6) Any team we would like to trade with look at our players -- who are really all JAGS except Brady and maybe Moss (but only when playing with Brady) -- as made of gold, and will be willing to part with any other player, or any draft pick, to acquire them. It therefore becomes perfectly reasonable to say "...then trade Jabar Gaffney to San Diego for Antonio Gates and LaDanian Tomlinson, plus a first round pick. After all, none of THEM has ever been to the Dance."

Please keep these principles in mind when discussing offseason pickups.

And I'll make my own assinine suggestions by and by :D

    You forgot
    7) Any player who leaves the Pats and signs with another team really sucks and always did.
    8) Any player on a division rival sucks. Then he becomes a FA and we must have him 'he killed us'. I we dont get him we never wanted him, if we do he is great.
    9) The HOLE CARD. If you don't agree with me then you don't agree with BB. (Curcular logic to perfection. I will make a point, I will include in my point that clearly BB would agree, so to disaree with my point is to disagree with BB and if you disagree that BB concurs, then you just don't know how BB thinks)

Of course I must add my IN SEASON favorites.
    1) Any time a pass is completed against one of our corners he sucks and cant cover anyone.
    2) Anything worse that zero 3rd down conversions means we 'cant get off the field'
    3) If the QB gets sacked at all, the OL is a bunch of turnstiles. If there are no sacks, the OL still sucks because the QB got beaten up all day (assuming he was hit at least once)
    4) Unless we score a TD on every play the OC sucks, any fan could have called better plays, in fact they knew the play wasn't going to work.
    5) Any time we lose we 'didn't make adjustments at halftime' (someone surely has a mike in the lockerrom, and in the play calling headset) and we lost because of effort, the player sleep-walked through the game, 'didnt show up' or otherwise just didnt want to try hard that day. Oh, but when we win, we draw great pride from how hard those players we are no longer distancing ourselves from, but now attaching oursleves to played.

Well, David Barrett just got the axe by the Jets, and he's a cornerback, so there's another one.

It's possible I'm making this up entirely (can't find anything on google), but didn't Greenwood make a visit to Foxboro before signing with Houston? Anyone recall?
