This guy is young and still has amazing potential.

This guy is a top 5 corner in the league.

This guy is just as important as Richard Seymour.

If we lose this guy we will be very very sorry, he isn't Branch, he's a top tier corner, and we NEED him.

I would love to see us resign him, It's amazing how much he has improved during his career here. However...If he doesn't get resigned we will survive without him...We always survive thats what makes this team GREAT.

The Pats will pay him what they value him to be.

And that may be what he's asking. It may not.

You know it almost doesn't matter to me. The title of this thread is exactly what I thought when I saw that.

Now, once I come down from the high of this game it will fully sink in that a lot of what Samuels does is benefit from knowing the system so well. As they pointed out, Samuel recognized/understood the D scheme in that Sanders was there to cover his man, freeing him up to take a chance.

The Patriots seem to do with DBs what the Broncos do with OLs and RBs - find the right guys who fit their system making everyone look good

But that only goes so far - Samuel is having a great year and his instincts are incredible - I'm not sure you can teach that or discount it as a quality of the system

I'd pay him the market rate - which is going to be quite high right now.

They should franchise Asante if they can't agree on a new contract.

Wouldn't that equate the to the average salary of the top 5 cb's in the league, not sure that will be good value.. but then you never know.

To matchup with the Colts you need both your #1 and #2 corners to be strong. And you better have quality depth at nickel and dime back as well. Who remembers Alexander getting burned for a deep TD because we ran out of unfatigued cover personnel?

So sign Samuel, draft and impact DB. And dip your toe into the Briggs and Stallworth sweepstakes as well. That's how we need to rebuild.

I believe that the Packers did something similar before they went to the Superbowl in '96, they drafted bigger corners to deal with the wideout threats of teams like the Rams of that era, etc.

Couldnt agree with you more. Depth at DB and a playmaking WR. By the sounds of it, Bruschi will retire, so they will need to do some work there as well. Build WR through free agency and draft a top LB and CB.

This deal should be hammered out before they even land in Boston. I could actually understand with the other players that we let walk but if they just let Samuel walk, I will be in utter dismay. He is the cornerstone to the rebuilding of our defense and we need to keep him whatever the cost.

Are there 5 cornerbacks who were better than Asante this year? He had as good a year as any Ty Law ever had.

IMO Samuel deserves to get PAID. He has shown that he is more than just interceptions, but he is almost/already a shutdown corner, with lots of room for improvement. He deserves special treatment like Tom and Richard. I really hope that both camps can come to an agreement. I also hope that Samuel is reasonable enough to give a hometown discount to the Pats and that he (and his agent) is not blinded by money, thus selling himself to the highest bidder. In my 2 cents worth, if he goes to a team that offers the highest bid for his services, he would be under the greatest of pressure (a la Eli M). The fans would not be forgiving and would be impatient with him, since he has not yet built goodwill with them and so they expect so much from him, especially with the price paid by the team. He would be one minor injury (especially for the position of a CB) from falling out of the grace of the fans and the new team. Worse, he can become a journeyman. If he stay with the Pats, we can reasonably expect the Fans will be somewhat tolerant with him since he has already established good will and made some "investment'. He can even leveraged the goodwill to get endorsements, etc. The other factor to consider is the familiarity with the Pats systems and the players. I think this is also a factor of his success. Go Pats:rocker:

Clearly he is a premier corner in the league, and BB sees that.
I am pretty sure the Pats will franchise him. A big payout for one year commitment. That would be good business.

I dont think the Pats will be able to lock him into a longer term deal at his market price.

I highly doubt that he signs any time soon. He would be a fool to. He's probably THE most valuable FA this year. In a year where the cap goes up so much that everyone is willing to spend. And he plays a position that historically makes great money. This is a one time opportunity for him. I see him getting franchised then testing the market. Since according to the new CBA you can't tag him more than once I don't see the Pats keeping him with a one year contract. If they can't hammer out something long term he'll be dealt to the highest bidder. Don't forget, we have Hobbs on the other side who is coming into his own as well. Throw in there some decent safeties and God willing a young, athletic ILB and we still have a solid secondary without Samuel.

haha i thought this said that they should "fire" assante if they can't agree to a new contract... I was going to ask you what the hell you are talking about.

I couldn't sleep last night and i can't sleep now.

And i think this is a waste of everyone's time.. sorry.

i would like to see him stay. hobbs and samuel essentially shut down harrison and wayne last night. except for that bull pass interference call (which i don't blame on the refs cause hobbs never turned around) they both were pretty spectacular last night. they both know the system and i think will hold down the corner positions for several years to come.
