    Or, two.

Even if they extend Watson, the recieving production from the TE position was lttle to none this past season.

    Watson - 6 seasons - 7 - 09 starts

    UFAs

    AZ - Becht A - 10 season - 10 - 09 starts
    BAL - Smith LJ - 7 seasons - 0 - 09 starts
    CIN - Kelly R - 11 seasons - 0 - 09 starts
    CLE - Gaines M - 6 seasons - 7 - 09 starts
    DET - Fitzsimmons C - 7 seasons - 1 - 09 starts
    DET - Heller W - 7 seasons - 9 - 09 starts
    KC - Ryan S - 6 seasons - 8 - 09 starts
    NO - Campbell D - 11 seasons - 0 - 09 starts
    NO - Dinkins D - 8 seasons - 3 - 09 starts
    NO - Miller B - 10 seasons - 0 - 09 starts
    NYJ - Hartstock B - 6 seasons - 7 - 09 starts
    SD - Wilson K - 6 seasons - 0 - 09 starts
    STL -McMichael R - 8 seasons - 16 - 09 starts
    WAS - Yoder T - 10 seasons - 1 - 09 starts

    RFAs

    CAR - King J - 4 seasons - 15 - 09 starts
    DEN - ScHeffler T - 4 seasons - 9 - 09 starts
    HOU - Daniels 0 -4 seasons - 8 - 09 starts
    MIA - Fasano A - 4 seasons - 14 - 09 starts
    NO - Thomas D - 4 seasons - 8 - 09 starts
    TEN - Scaife B - 5 seasons - 10 - 09 starts

I've always like McMichael, but I dont know how good a blocker he is. And, Fasano would be just what thew Dr. ordered, but BB would never go after Parcells players even if they were willing to spend the draft picks.

UFA market is weak. Watson should make a killing this coming year

I think you can look solely and squarely at our scheme for the lack of production from the TE's. We just don't send them down the field that often, and when we do we don't look their way anyway.

I'd draft a good young blocking TE (Moeaki), and then look to pick up another vet or camp body in FA

We do not throw to our TE yet you want a receiving TE ?.

watson is going to make a killng for sure and be more effective when used as a real receiving option.

I can see McKid trading Scheffler and then grabbing Watson.

Looking at the UFAs, none represent an upgrade over Baker. None of the RFAs are going to be worth the draft pick compensation, so the Draft and/or the trade market is the only way to address the position. There are rumors that Greg Olsen may be available in a trade from Chicago, and I'd consider it for a 4th round pick. Preferably, the Patriots would find a smooth, tall red zone target in the draft to team with Baker. However, the Patriots have consistently drafted shorter (almost all of their drafted TEs have been 6'3), workout warrior types, which I believe has been an overlooked factor in their recent red zone woes.

IF the Pats can lock-up Big Vince prior to 2/25, I would slap the franchise tag on Watson. The tag for TE is @5 mil. The Pats could easily carry that, or trade him for a 2 or a 3 + draft picks. As you can see from the UFA TE list, Watson would shoot right to the top of that list. It is a high reward, low risk move.

I'd be happy with Watson-Baker again, if we are able to let them run routes more often. We saw a glimpse of what Baker can do in that preseason game vs. Philly, and in the game vs. Atlanta, but it seems like the rest of the season he was primarily a blocker.

I'd give a late 2nd at most for Watson.

Watson's gone and we don't need him, especially for $5million. Brady doesn't trust him and we have plenty of picks this year to draft a young tight end. It's a fairly deep crop for tight ends this year. Bring in a camp body and draft someone.

Always thought that this O did not maximize his potential... a lot of upside to keeping him.

Watson is an excellent TE, he just does not get the receptions because of the system that the Pats play. Has everyone forgot about that catch and run against Jacksonville in the playoffs? How bout that catch he made opening night, when he scored 2 TDs in 90 seconds? Watson is about as fast as TE come, he has the size and is a very good blocker. You watch if he goes to a different system, he will be in the Pro-Bowl. I would franchise him in a second, no risk move. Either work out a trade or keep him, either way, it works for the Pats.

If you want to say Watson isn't worth the $5m thats fine but don't say Brady doesn't trust him. You have no proof of that.

How much of that is due to players like Watson dropping the ball?

And, yeah, Brady could use more recieving options unless youre happy with throwing to Moss or the Slot WR every passing down.

In 2007 and 2009 Watson caught over 70% of the ball thrown to him which is slightly above average. In those years he had very few drops.

In 2008 he was brutal w/ catch % around 50% and 6 drops- last of all TE in the league.

Doesn't make any sense keeping him for high dollars. He's not worth much in our system and it's not necessarily his fault.

I think they're going to be trying to save a lot of money this year. Doubt they want to blow any on him.

Watson would sign in a heartbeat for $5M, so a franchise tag is certainly not an issue. Perhaps we should transition him, so that we can have an aopportunity to match.
