re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

The man led the league in sacks with 16 on a very bad Raiders team in 2005 - That alone spells a very good deal for the Patriots and the Raiders can use those picks to continue to slowly develop into a professional football team ;)

I estimate based upon my perception of the value, just as Belichick does. I may have a different 'value rating', but it's the same thinking. It's why I wasn't burning candles for Julius Peppers to be obtained.

I suspect you and BB do indeed have slightly different value functions lol. He probably weights winning this year more highly than you do :D

Re: Pats acquire Burgess

What do you estimate the probability of getting a starter with a 3rd + 5th pick is? How about a starter that will ever be the best pass rusher on the team?

:yeahthat:

Quoting myself from a couple of days ago:

Does anybody really have a big problem with an ILB roster of Mayo, Guyton, Bruschi, Lenon (and should have been McKenzie)? Or with an OLB depth chart of Thomas, X, Woods, Crable, Banta-Cain? That's not a vast, systematic neglect of the LB corps. It's being one man short.

So they just filled in the X, leaving either Burgess or Woods as a very solid #3. Happy happy.

I feel the same about this team as I did about our 2007 right before that season began. We have no weaknesses on this team. Barring a barrage of injuries this team shouldn't lose any more than two or three games.

I doubt that.

If they gave up a 3rd and a 4th, that would be horrible.
Why? I thought OLB was the last hole in our lineup?

If he is the last piece to the puzzle and we fixed the last issue, that ought to be worth quite a bit.

Then people like 'BRO' would have to find something else to whine about.

He's relatively young as well. 30. Maybe a change of scenery will do him good.

I think we may have just filled "Z" the nickel/dime OLB that lines up as a DE.
I dont envision Burgess playing every down, or even seeing much time in the base D.
I see him coming in as a pass rusher when we play nickel and dime, which is most of 3rd downs, about half of 2nds and 1st down agaisnt selected teams.
Thats close to half the snaps, and more than our 2nd ILB will play.

Just looked up Burgess and Ellis stats, and I was struck that Ellis has easily twice as many starts behind him. Burgess should have a lot of life left in him.

Now keep the team healthy.... *crosses fingers*

re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

...which while admittedly ambiguous parses better as both picks being in 2011.
Not sure many people parse when they tweet ;)

Are you kidding? After languishing in that black hole for the last few years, that guy must be :singing: while he's packing his bags to leave Oakland.

re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

Think that's wishful thinking. Lombardi has said so far:

Michael Lombardi (michaelombardi) on Twitter

...which while admittedly ambiguous parses better as both picks being in 2011.

I read that as meaning 3rd rounder this next draft and 5th in 2011. If you watch NFLN this is the way Lombardi phrases things.
