Maybe, but it also probably has a lot to do with damage control. A smart business move.
Who REALLY wants to see another Aaron Hernandez jersey again? "Let's try and pretend that he was never a Patriot." Also placates the fans and such.
Of course, they didn't have to do this, and there certainly can't be many people that would ever really WANT to wear Hernandez's jersey again. His mom still thinks he'll be vindicated, but then again so did Ted Bundy's. Dunno, but this move sounds like the Patriots think he's a murderer...think about it. This move SCREAMS that opinion, really.
Never heard of anything like this happening before.
I don't wear player jerseys or anything else that points out a players. I wear a Pats hat and Pats jackets. I'm pretty sickened by all this crap, in fact I've been getting pretty disillusioned since 2007. I do not trust what I see anymore. It's like it's a constant battle to keep the invisible arms and and hands out of my pockets as I use my recreative time to follow my favorite team in my favorite sport.
The swapback is a nice gesture...it's also an obvious PR move. What franchise wants a homicidal gangster's jersey displayed on world wide telecommunications tying their brand to a psychopath? It's shrewd business and as such, not surprising coming from the Kraft Group.

I really dont share your pessimism. Its a very nice thing to do, and the team will lose money for doing it. So not a good buisness move. Very nice and classy. No other teams fans will ever notice 81 or AH's name, if they did nothing, hes only popular in pats circles at this point.

Smart move, the last thing they want is G's and wannabe G's wearing Hernandez Patriot jerseys as a tribute to him, and letting fans trade theirs in and burning them allows them to continue to remove all traces of Hernandez as a Patriot. When he is convicted i expect them to delete his name from their history.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't trade them in please burn them and help erase his memory from Patriots history. Don't let them go to Goodwill etc.....
After seeing a picture of "individuals" at the court house wearing Hernandez's jersey, it dawned on me. It will be dress-up attire for gangs. Also, it will be like wearing a scarlet letter, tho, police can currently see gang colors.
All the moves by the Patriots have been ahead of the curve, cut Hernandez and offer a jersey exchange. Seriously, what parent wants to have their child wearing this shirt? Who would want to wear his shirt except a low-life.
We'll see how far they're willing to go. . . . Will they literally remove him from their records? [He was already tied for 18th all time in Patriots receiving TDs, and 23d in receptions.]
I don't think he should be removed from team stats/records. First of all, what he did on the field has nothing to do with what he did off it. Second, removing his on-field stats would cause gaps relating to the team and other players -- Brady especially.
