Last season, I thought we kind of limped into opening day with an aging Dillon and a rookie sharing snaps at running back, and two virtual unknowns, a rookie, and an aging slot man at receiver. Now it looks like we're powering our way into next season with absolute burners like Stallworth and Washington on the outside, hard nosed Wes Welker getting the tough yards in the slot, and complimentary guys like Gaffney and Caldwell also lining up. Although I'm a little unsure as to why we signed Washington when we could have used that money to upgrade further at LB or safety, he could very well be a perfect fit in our system and make it almost impossible (if lined up opposite Donte) for teams to double team Stallworth. Our upgrades at that position have opened opened up new holes for Maroney and Sammy Morris because opposing teams will no longer have the luxery of stacking the box to pressure Tom Brady.

This coming season, it seems that the offense will be better than the defense and the defense isn't or won't be a slouch either looking at how the draft is stacked.

Please, we will have to hear it from now until opening day, and yet none of us have any idea what our offense will do then. I HOPE they are going to kick ass, but we do not know how the TEAM will play based on signing a couple of new players.

It is certainly beginning to look like a team of all the talents.

Moving from Caldwell/Gaffney to being 1 and 2 to being maybe 4 and 5 or 5 and 6 is an incredible upgrade. We have Maroney going into his second year, two very high quality tight ends who can make plays with the ball and a third who can block for LoMo. The line is more or less secure and we have the best in the business under centre. The follow up cast of Evans, Morris and Faulk is extremely handy.

It's difficult not to get excited about our prospects. And just the six months until the season :(

Patience. At this point I'm not sure the Washington signing is the thing that's going to put this offense over the top!

No, it's not him per se. It's the idea that the very obvious deficiencies have been very obviously addressed.

A lot of thinga have to click into place for all this to begin working for the Pats. But on a dark March evening it sure feels good to sit back here and imagine how it might be...

If our offense could get to the championship last year with two unknowns at receiver and old man Dillon and Maroney at backs, think about what it can do now with very obvious improvements where the holes were.

    #75 Jersey

Unless there's been a rule change, I think they only get to use one football per play, so the change might not be that dramatic.

And we were 3rd in scoring in the AFC.

Kelly Washington isnt a burner by any needs. Hes more like a tall possesion receiver like Caldwell.

Stallworth had 38 catches last year. Washington had 9. Let's relax.
Or Donald Hayes if you want to be really negative.

We still need a left tackle to open up holes in the run game and to keep Jason Taylor off of Tom Brady's back.

Holy GOD, people need to take a breath. Say what you will about them, but Caldwell and Gaffney are way, WAY more proven and productive than Kelley F-ing Washington.

Exactly. That's why they play the games. Games and SBs are hardly won on paper or in war rooms.

I'll buy the Jason Taylor thing but Matt Light is one of the best run blocking LT in the league.

An upgrade at the position is certainly not a "need" more like a luxury. Light ir more than serviceable. We've onyl won three Superbowls with him.

Our offense COULD be good, but this thread was started out of excitement about signing Donte Stallworth and Kelley Washington. Please. Looks like a hole on the team is being addressed, to some degree. We'll see. That should be the extent of it.

Very true. I'm amused by those who feel that Light is replaceable. His skills, work ethic, loyalty, and value make him a solid member of the OL for the unforseen future.

I think 31 teams in the NFL are looking for a LT that can consitently keep the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year off of their QB's back.

Light has done a good job in the past and will continue to do well in the future.

Sure Light struggles against Taylor and Schobel but he also has dominated Merriman, Freeney, and Kearse. I don't blame Light for getting beaten by some of the best pass rushers in the game. It seems like he always steps up in the playoffs.

I know thats right its a long way to go and a long season lets give the TEAM and especially the new players a chance to get adjusted to the system. This is exciting times for Patriot fans with all the new additions and the upcoming draft so lets just sit back and relax and let the TEAM come together.
