I never want to see people get hurt, but it is part of the game and these guys know the risks. Even if he leads with his shoulder he still gets fined for launching into a defenseless receiver. I would love to hear what guys like Lott and Atwater think of the new rules. They made it to the Hall of Fame by making hits like that.
The NFL has already given the defense a vasectomy, its only a matter of time before they neuter them too.
OT but: The endzone, helmet-first hit on Heap was disgusting and currently is not part of the game, and the other hit by BM wasn't good either. The helmet hits should continue to be penalized. And I think the policing of hits on the defenseless QB is also headed in the right direction, though it needs to be ironed out.
And meanwhile, cracking the whip on those cheap head hunter plays, which serve no purpose other than ending careers and scrambling brains, has been balanced by loosening up on the PI/holding calls. Defenders are allowed to make a lot more contact than before, including being able to put a hand on the receiver downfield, and they don't have to turn their heads back to the ball as much.
Much like with BB and in life, the league is always finding room to improve.
