Andrew Callahan saying that Mayo is indeed likely gone and will explore his opportunities this offseason.

It was only a matter of time... Question is does he leave to be a DC (99% gone) or does he try for the brass ring, and go for an open HC position (>5%) ?

DC? potential landing spots aplenty - there are a lot of bad defenses out there... Minnesota, hell the whole nfc north for that matter, josh's defense in Las Vegas needs an overhaul, Josh Boyer us on melting ice in Miami, Cleveland, and Arizona to name a few...

HC? Maybe Arizona... Indy but that cupboard is bare, Houston if he and Nick can work together... I think he's a no go as HC in Carolina and Denver - I think those guys are going to be on the Payton/Harbaugh train...

If his contract is up then the Pats wont get any comp picks for developing a minority coach, would that be correct ?

Would be sad to see him go. He always comes off amazing in his interviews.

Hopefully BB's kid is actually good.

Opens a position that will need to be filled. Where might the Pats find a good DC? Maybe a former HC who proved not to be a good OC?

If his contract is up, why do the Patriots have a say in his next employment gig? What kind of indentured servitude system is the NFL running?

Do Pats get a draft pick for him leaving?

Only if he becomes a head coach.

If he’s a defensive coordinator elsewhere for (at least) two seasons and then becomes a head coach, then that other team gets picks. If he’s a defensive coordinator elsewhere for only one year and then becomes a head coach, then nobody gets any picks.

I hope a couple things are true here:

1. That this decision is mutual, meaning BB isn't overwhelmingly high on Mayo (hopefully he is accurate in that assessment, if that is the case)
2. The succession plan will be more than just Steve B. and an largely invisible internal "promotion"

Have we really seen evidence of Mayo being HC material? I wonder if BB officially bestowed him the title of DC he'd be more willing to stay.

I guess Steve B is staying and will become DC.
I am not advocating for this but am reading the tea leaves.

They've both been growing together one is staying and the other is leaving because he knows the one is better.

I don't think successions and are needed here. Other than the obvious churning of coaching talent. Something missing on the Offensive side but evident of these 2 and Flores and gosh even Matty P before it the defensive side seems to have had many.

Now pressure is on both Mayo and Stephen to produce without each other. I think Stephen will do fine because he's got BB on his back still. Mayo on the other hand I think will do fine too but I feel like he's taking a bigger risk. He was getting interest even without a DC title and he possibly could have got that HC gig just working here til it opened for him but now he has to go out on his own and get it done in a second location for it to happen. I think he like Vrable always seemed destined for it so he should do fine and by going on his own he probably can make it happen quicker.

As for us Stephen is more than ready for it here and I see no reason to worry.

We're onto offensive coaching now lol ....

Denver interviewed him last year.

Sounds like Covington is ready for more responsibility if/when Mayo leaves. He was mentioned as a longer term HC candidate by NFL.com in November. Upward movement on defense means shuffling between positions, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s with the LBs next season.

Good for Mayo, seems to have leadership qualities. Wish him the best.

This will be a big loss for the defense, especially the linebackers.

Mayo was known as Jerod Belichick because of the religious devotion to the playbook and gameplans. A few of the guys on D have been very open about the amount of advice they get from Mayo. He's smart and a very hard worker.

So maybe Belichick can replace him but he can't replace the fact that Mayo has played the game at a very high level. There's something to be said for that.

Mayo was never long to be with the Pats. Lets hope he stays a few more years. Great guy - I wish him all the best.
