Because the real flu is no joke and most of the time when people say "he had the flu" it's not the real flu. And if it is, it doesn't go away in 3 days, it's a week minimum.

This may sound extreme, but assuming the body builds up resistance after getting through a cold or flu, would it be out of the question to have players intentionally infected in the off-season?
If I were getting paid even $500,000/year I would be willing to intentionally get sick when it doesn't matter so that I would not be at risk when my performance was really needed.
