Can someone explain the Justin Fields hype?

I've seen the idea of NE trading for Fields a lot, with some idjits (not here, thank God) suggesting the Patriots trade #3 for Fields and the Bears' #9.

Can someone please explain the logic of this? It just feels like trading one messed-up QB for another messed-up QB.

Because it's trading one messed-up QB for another messed-up QB - whose stats are shockingly similar.

Worst QB of the 2021 draft class has become a true race to the bottom.

To be clear, I meant "Why should the Patriots do this?"

Its not really about Fields as much is its about people being afraid of drafting a potential backup QB or drafting the #15-20th ranked QB with the 3rd overall pick. The idea I have seen was give CHI a 3rd round pick for Fields and draft either Alt or MHJ with #3

They want to draft the sure-fire player and trade for someone who is a top 20-25 QB that is young with some upside

I like the idea, personally. Fields is a dual threat (can run) and was showing improvement as a passer down the stretch last season. He would be the proverbial bridge guy while the position is being reset, assuming there's a rookie in the mix. He also might blossom into a solid starter given a change of scenery and better coaching, which Van Pelt could offer. Young, strong, with upside and relatively inexpensive (at least at first) both in salary and draft capital needed to get him -- likely a third-rounder. I'd rather take a flyer on Fields vs. guaranteed mediocrity with someone like Brissett or paying heavily for one of the other FA veteran QBs being discussed.

Another thing: considering the OL will be another work in progress, the Pats will need someone athletic behind center who can make plays with his legs.

I don’t love the idea, but I could see trading for him. Definitely not 3 for Fields and 9. Maybe a third round pick.

I don’t love the prospects after Williams and Maye and he’s only a year older than Daniels, Nix, and Penix. He may still have more potential, a higher floor, and cost less draft capital than those three.

And to be clear, I am in complete agreement with you. Why would you waste any assets whatsoever to bring in a guy who is, at best, marginally better than Mac Jones. Other than 'hurr durr he can run'. You're better off trading out of 3 and loading up on draft capital, and start Mac Jones, and get a top 5 pick next year too - maybe that's the plan.

But, we've seen 3 years of him in the league, and all he does is suck. Also he criminally underachieved in college.

Mac and a third for Fields. He is big, strong runs like a fullback and has a great arm.
Relatively inexpensive lottery ticket. Allows Pats to draft Joe Alt

Because people are scared ****less over taking a QB at #3. The alternative option is to pick MHJ with the belief that Fields, who is alright, can be elevated further by a top notch receiver.

Personally I don't love the idea of inevitably handing out a sizeable paycheck to an average QB.

It would be beyond stupid to trade for Fields. The Bears know he sucks, the Patriots know he sucks, the fans know he’s sucks. Why would you trade for a player that sucks. It’s much better to get a draft pick for Mac instead.

And this is the misconception. "Better than Mac Jones" doesn't mean "all right".

I'm not interested. In the event it were to happen the only trade that would make sense for both sides would be pick 3 for Fields & 9.

Bears get Williams and MHJ.

Pats get Field with Nabers/Odunze or the remaining tackle of the top 3.

My preference is making a selection at 3.

That means that Fields is worth the #20 pick in the draft. He is . . . not.
