You do realize, when the patriots go 2-wide, Welker plays outside, right? And that they don't seem to have any problem moving the ball?
He said it wasn't OPTIMAL. He didn't say he COULDN'T compete as a wide out. I'd be willing to say that during a season where aproximately 1000 offensive plays were run (approx 55-60 per game), Welker might have lined up in a 2 wide formaition less than 30 times.
BBs genius is being able to put players in positions where they are most likely to succeed. As a wide Welker has more trouble getting off press coverage, and doesn't have nearly the speed to threaten deep on a regular basis. Why take an asset and downgrade his maximum strengths (quickness and hand) to put him in a position where he's likely to be LESS effective. NOT uneffective...but LESS
