I also thought Rogers' play was encouraging. What I like even more was what he said afterwards about how he failed to "set the edge" on a running play. He took accountability for a football mistake and seems hell-bent on never letting it happen again. I know it sounds like player-speak, but it does give me a sense hes taking the coaching and wants to be the best he can be for this team.

As long as he can continue taking the coaching and absorb the mental aspect of football and apply to the field, we've got a real nice player on our hands.

The kid made a couple of nice open field tackles; showed good speed when sacking the QB; seems to have a nose for the ball. We still need to see if he can be effective in coverage. I think I only saw him drop back a couple of times and they didn't throw into his area. I also think he is way smaller than "6'4"" 260 LBS"

[BTW, is it just me, or is there anyone else hoping he makes it, just so we can see "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" signs at Foxboro in a couple of years? :D ]

I would hope for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood signs whether Justin makes the team or not. Feature X the Owl and Donkey Hodey, maybe with Edgar Cook peeking in from the side.

I really hope this kid works out good for the Pats. That would be huge. We need to start getting some younger linebackers. There are so many positives for this kid, one of which being his famous father. I didn't even know that his dad was famous until i read into it further....

You can't overlook Justin's great uncle Roy and great aunt Dale . . . The legend begins to develop . . .

The open issue is whether he is better than Alexander, Woods, and Mays (the other young linebackers). Should he really replace Woods and take his reps, relegating Woods to ST's?

Or, does he force Chad Brown into retirement?

Yes, I understand that Brown is on the bubble. I just meant to point out that there are plenty of youngsters each year. We had four on last year's team; Banta-Cain, Woods, Alexander and Mays. Even wtih Brown gone, if three make this year's team, none of this year's rooks will, leaving us

Vrabel, Bruschi, Thomas. Colvin, Seau, Izzo, Woods, Alexander and Mays.

As you know, I replace Mays with Brown. Rogers may very well get that spot instead.

But the general point was that there will always be a couple of kids with potential, even on a bb team where he greatly prefers experienced linebackers.

Let's not go overboard. What has Woods done wrong, nothing. Right? Last years pre season, all year STs and a "hardest worker spot".

Let's say he looked good, but also by comparison, since Mays looked like one of those electric football guys that gets stuck in a corner, running in circles.

Remember there's and extra spot for Don Davis.

Rogers combine measurements were 6'3 1/8" and 252 lbs. I could see the Pats staff rounding it up to 6'4 and 260. Heck, he could have put on 8 lbs since the combine easily.

Woods has nothing to worry about from Rogers. Not yet anyways. Mays, on the other hand, is probably on his way to being cut. He MIGHT go to the practice squad, but I honest hope that the Pats send him on his way...

BB prefers LBs who can come and contribute to the system. BB has attempted to develop some youth LBs in the past, experimenting on late rounds until he finds the correct combination so he can start looking earlier in the draft. Woods was higher on people's list than TBC ever was from what I have seen. I think that Woods will show that he can more than adequately spell Colvin or Vrabel on the outside. Something that TBC never proved.

Woods primary position, though, will be special teams. That is where he'll continue to make his mark. Just like Bruschi before him.

I think that Rogers could also make his mark there. As long as he doesn't commit penalties, he'll be one step ahead of Mays. Rogers actually looked very good against the Bucs 2nd team offense.

Just an FYI - Woods wasn't on STs all year. In fact, he was inactive for 7 games, dressed for an 8 and didn't play at all and played in 11 games including the play-offs.

As for their being an extra-spot because of Don Davis, Mays was given that spot when Davis went on the IR. That is the spot that Rogers could take if he proves himself capable.

Huh...must have been the camera angle. I was mentally comparing him with Colvin and Vrabel who just seem bigger. It must be an illusion as the scale doesn't lie (unfortunately for some of us).

You need to stand next to the players on level ground. Troy really is 5'10" while Kevin Faulk is not really 5'8".

Or stick them next to Kyle Brady, who makes anyone other than a lineman look puny. :D

I stand corrected. Didn't really think about the "all year" thing, I guess I meant he was making tackles on STs.

The point is, he's looked as good as could be expected in his limited opportunities.

If Mays has the spot, it couldn't be more up for grabs IMO. Let's face it, they're throwing linebackers against the wall to see what sticks. If Woods, Rogers and Alexander turn out to be legitimate, they're lucky.

I still doubt they have all the young linebackers they need for the near future out of this crop.

On the inside I totally agree. I was very disappointed in the play of the ILBs in the TB game. It seemed that no one from taht position could shed a block and it also seemed that no one from that position could cover worth a damn. Lua was around the ball, but it seemed that a guy with better instincts or just more talent would have broken up several of the plays that he got a tackle on.

Yeah, although Bruschi made the transition from rush specialist to OLB, then ILB, he's built different than our DE/OLB prospects who are both quite tall.

I have a feeling they might fill the spot with an affordable vet FA.
