Is the end of the NFL near - antitrust exemption threat by congresswoman

With all that Congress has on their plate, is their time best served trying to take away the league's antitrust exemption because of a small number of football players who have multiple concussions. It is something that the league should spend more effort to protect the players, but is it really something the U.S. Government should be involved in? If concussions are a big issue in football, why are they wasting time at the pro level protecting multimillionaires and not worry about the tens of thousands of school kids who play football every year.

I really don't get why the government needs to use the antitrust exemption to get involved in professional sports. I had a problem with the Congress getting involved in steriod issue, but at least I can see how professional athletes taking steriods could set a bad example for kids who dream of being sports stars. But how does dealing with the multiple concussion issue help the general public in any way. It only affects a small minority of professional football players. Why waste so much time and effort to protect a few hundred people when there are far bigger issues that Congress seems to never tackle.

While I agree with you in general, the context of the discussion was around neurological problems. If an industry has a predisposition to a specific medical condition, I think it is incumbent upon the industry to work to prevent the condition (to the best of their ability) and to mitigate the effects for former employees.

Does this also include the massive spike in mental ******ation when people become members of Congress? Because the industry does very little to prevent this condition.

I do agree that more needs to be done to assist former players. But this politician isn't going to do anything to assist anyone.

Nah, they're stupid long before they get elected.

Wacky Max is just helping the NFLPA take a shot across the owner's bow as the CBA negotiations heat up, with a new politically connected NFLPA Chief there will be a bunch of this garbage the next year or two.

We hear this threat every year or so and nothing ever comes of it. A couple Super Bowl tickets placed in the right Congessional hands always make it go away.

It amazes me what I'd like to term the "special people" in governments around the world.

shes the congressperson who screamed at other congresspeople on the house floor for warning that fannie mae and freddie mac were going to cause an economic crisis and something had to be done

Right on Box. She got a check from the NFLPA to shoot this at Goodell.

The exemption is the number one, most important thing on the NFL's list.

The union knows that this can be their most important bargaining chip.

The NFL pension is a joke. Most players only get a couple of hundred bucks a month. The union has already stated that this will be one of their priorities during the negotiations, and probably will be the cause of a walkout if it isn't fixed.

Why does congress always seem to pick on sports, there are plenty of things to fix in this country... The Nfl is definatly not one of them... Politics, is a joke..
