Is local sports talk radio becoming irrelevant????

I prefer to just not listen. Anyway, I was being sarcastic with the apocalypse. You can't stop Red Sox talk.

Time will stop Red Sox talk. Most of the die hard fans are well over 40. Every year, the fan base shrinks more and more, while the Pats fan base continues to grow.

Out and about during the midday, and as usual looking for some Patriots tid bits I could savor...

Gresch and Zo.. on and on, about Gronkowski and the porn star wearing a Patriots Jersey and how the "brand" might be damaged, what would be the outcome of his faux pas.. even went as far as worrying about the loss of the Patriots Moral Compass after the passing of Myra Kraft... changed the channel to WEEI.

Merloni and sidekick.. hoping that the RS would make John Farrell the Red Sox Manager, because the players were "afraid" of him and all ills would be solved. Pretty sure that if you have a guaranteed contract of 10+ million not too many managers will "scare" you. Then they morphed into concerns about TB's 5th target, Ocho Cinco, and trying to create more controversy that was left over from Friday's show which I also tuned out of when they were trying to fabricate controversy there as well.

Then switched to the IPOD...

Perhaps I am becoming less tolerant about this type of stuff, but used to savor Patriots Monday.. and now the contiual Red Sox talk and worrying about a picture of Gronkowski has diluted the overall quality. The medium has become the message, and the medium sucks.. all of these shows are becoming unbearable to listen to. Never mind the other slots, they are as bad if not worse.

Thank god for this message board, as there is no hysteria here;););) only respectful factual discourse.
I tune in to eei about half a dozen times a year only to listen for about twenty seconds and turn it off

These people don't seem to realize that THEY are the reason that its so difficult to play and manage the RS. The absolute 24 hour, seven days a week, 12 months a year, obsession and second guessing of Every move, and every play, is to much.

No, I [180054GIANT, CALL GIANT GLASS!] think that sports radio [For drinks and adult fun in a clean atmosphere, visit the Foxy Lady in Providence!] still has plenty of [Come down to Woburn Ford for our Presidents day sale!] relevance even in [Whenever we need catering done, we call the experts at Edible Arrangements.] this digital day [Stubhub.com is your ticket trading and selling destination] there is still a place [Pet Smart is your #1 Pet store destination for all your pet shopping needs!] for radio.

Perhaps it is my naivete to expect more than what is being delivered on both stations.. too much bloviated self importance, too much overtalking, efforts at creating controversy and very little substantive content...

With the exception of Troy Brown and Tedy Bruschi, it all sucks.. I expect more than what is being delivered, which is more about entertainment than the sport I am a fan of.

Also the Celtics are dead to all of us, so they do not have as much content to deal with.. so the RS are more important than they need to be.

I'm okay with it ... I only listen when driving and I like WEEI. Can't stand the 98.5 people and that goes back a ways. Felger, Mazz and especially the blowhard Gresch. WEEI I like Dennis, tolerate Callahan, Mutt and Merloni are like 2 normal guys talking sports - neither good or bad but I like that they discuss all 4 major local sports. I hate Ordway so I try not to listen after 2:00 and that's too bad because i really like Holley. i like that there's been more of Troy brown lately and he is getting better at it.

It's just something to listen to. in the old days it was good for breaking news and news. Now with Twitter and blogs they cannot compete in the news area. If you're bored working or in your car it's worth it IMO. If you have something better to do then do that - usually it is better. :p:p:p

Ordway is the personality that needs to be removed from EEI....immediately

he's nothing but a short fat bowling ball with arms and a dead rat sewn into his scalp who made his career being Johnny Most's flunky. This nitwit couldn't make his high school girls knitting class, never mind actually play a REAL sport involving MEN.

omg here we go again lmao. this thread will be in the redsox area of the board anytime now lol.

The day that you realize that sports talk radio has absolutely nothing to offer, your enjoyment of sports will rise dramatically.

the redsox have been in boston since the late 1800s. they are passed down from father to son year after year after year. it took 86 years for the redsox to win a ws from 1918 to 2004 and in that time the fan base grew and it continues to grow. dont hold your breath.

Sirius NFL radio is great, IMO. Its always an option and one you would probably find to be a pleasant surprise as long as you like to follow the NFL as a whole and not just the Pats.

Sports talk radio here in Boston is about controversy, if there isn't any, they must create it. Pretty blah stuff for people who want to hear about Xs and Os and players, etc.

NFL Radio is the way to go if you want to hear that stuff. They don't really do the controversy thing. Too bad you have to pay for it.

Seriously, I couldn't care less about Chad Johnson's adjustment to the offense, the Patriots are winning, that all that matters. I don't care about what Gronk was doing on the bye week, as long as he shows up to play, that is what counts.

Talk about Pittsburgh, talk about the offense, talk about how the defense is improving, the pass rush, the corners, what the DBs are doing differently and why it works. Lots of stuff to cover, if they wanted to.

I like Sirius NFL Radio and even listen to some ESPN radio. I like Cowherd and SVP.

I only listen to the Hub and WEEI after Pats games for instant analysis (which is usually pretty weak) and for the player/caoches press conferences. Oh, and also when TFB is on with D&C.

Other than that it's all First Wave and Back Spin in my car.

Local sports talk radio is far from irrelevant to most people. It serves two purposes, the first being entertainment and the second providing information on local sports. It does the former more regularly than the latter, so if you only want information you are going to find it lacking. Like any medium, if you tune in and don't find the subject matter appealing then you just tune out. But it is far from irrelevant. All you need to have heard are recent interviews with John Henry, Bibbi Jones and BB know that isn't the case.

Absolutely. The only show I could remotely bear to listen to was Dale & Holley (not that it was perfect). Then WEEI got rid of that and over on the other station, Felger and his "You're Absolutely Right, Mike" sidekick turned into total wankers. And Gresh is a waste of space (in addition to making the Pats postgame shows totally unlistenable). So I've pretty much given up on local sports radio these days.

I couldn't agree with you more. I can only stomach sports talk for so long, especially on a slow [bye] week. What irks me the most is how some hosts will make a huge deal out of a non story (Gronk and the porn star)...I know they have to fill 4 hours but they sound so ingenuine. "OK NOW LET'S talk about Gronk and the porn. What do you think??" call us at 617- blah blah blah

I like Felger and Mazz. I think after all these years listening to Big O and him worshiping everything the Pats do, I can appreciate a different point of view. I do think however that at some point Felger's shtick will run its course and contrairian-ism will sound old. They're talking Sox now which if I listen to one more minute of talk about ownership, Theo, Tito and the clubhouse I will poke my eyes out with a pencil...or maybe I ll just close my browser..that sounds less painful

I don't mind a "different point of view". I mind obnoxious douchebaggery and that's exactly what Felger and YARM ("You're absolutely right, Mike") do. Witness YARM's attacks on Pats fans. Or Felger and YARM going on and on during Brady's contract negotiations and talking about how wonderful Polian and the Colts were and then not saying a word when that contract dragged on a helluva lot longer than the Brady one did, etc.

If the Pats had lost to Dallas you would have heard quadruple the amount of Pats talk that you've heard since that game - even with L'Affaire d'Epstein. When the Patriots were in the midst of their 14-2 season last year, the jackholes on 98.5 (whom I prefer 99/100 to the blowhards on WEEI), often yakked more about Shaquille O'Neal's loafing and waistline than Pats football.
Know what would make the sports media landscape in Boston/New England 100 times better? Get Gary Tanguay GONE!!!!!!! I've never heard interviewer state incorrect facts to an interview subject more than Gary Tanguay. On the Pats pregame show on 98.5 Tanguay has been corrected by the person he's been interviewing the last three games! His false bravado and his raising of his voice when he's defending or making one of his RIDICULOUS speculations is nauseating. Gary, do us all a favor and GO BACK TO MAINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most off-putting thing about Tanguay is that he is so very obviously sucking up to Krafty Bob and Jonathan in every interaction on air because Tanguay covets that Pats PBP job once Santos calls it a career.....F TANGUAY!

Today is two press conferences involving both the former and the present GM of the team. Why wouldn't you expect that to get coverage and commentary? Also, Brady was interviewed this morning, on WEEI.
