And if the unthinkable happened in a month? Perhaps having backups for key players in good idea as an alternative to giving up the season.
Have we forgotten last year so quickly? It wasn't the quarterback who hadn't started a game since high school that kept us out of the playoffs.
It will take a few weeks for a QB to learn the system and be better than Hoyer (or not). This is a discussion every year. And every year, there are those who want us to carry a 2nd quarterback who has started an NFL game on our roster and those who prefer to essentially forfeit the game and the season if Brady is injured.
Last year, Belichick considered Cassel ready after four years of training. Perhaps Hoyer will be as ready for the 2011 season. In the meantime, having a backup is a good idea.

I kinda think that if Bill were really interested in signing a vet QB as a legit backup/sub for Brady, then that vet would've been signed shortly after Cassel had been traded.
As of now, however, if Brady is hurt tonight, then we're finished. There is no vet available who can learn the playbook in time to salvage the season, should the unthinkable happen again. So why bother to sign one now?
