score two receiving touchdowns in one postseason game. [The last was TE David Sloan for the Lions(!) after the 1995 season.]

It's a shame that Edelman is going to look back on this game and remember that the Pats got blown out, :( but he certainly played with heart today.

I think the Patriots will be fine with Elelman until Welker gets back, the real problem is the team needs a major upgrade of Aiken bad.

It's hard to believe a team with this much experience and outstanding management could allow such a steep drop off of WR talent after Moss and Welker. Of course losing Tate hurt, I think he could have developed nicely this year. And certainly excited about watching Edelman's growth, he is going to be a great weapon on this offense in the future.

Did they ever replace Stallworth? I don't think so, and that is where the problem starts for me. They only had two WRs. Who was #3-#5? I guess Edelman developed enough to be productive, but after him, who else did they have?

They tried to with Galloway. But that signing was a whiff of epic proportions.

Stallworth was just going through the motions and became largely absent from the offense by the end of the 2007, so that's why they let him go. It's Gaffney, who was a solid #2 for two years with this team, who should've never have left Foxboro.

This rookie will fill in nicely while Welker recovers. Our (hope to be new) coordinator can do something with both Welker and Edelman in a lineup.

Also everyone seems like Tate was the missing key, but he hardly got a chance to prove it.

Big mistake there (one of many this offseason). Did the team actually save any cap room by dropping Gaffney and signing Galloway and G. Lewis?

Congrats to Edelman. Our backup slot receiver has done well. We will likely need him to continue in a major role in 2010. Personally, I expect Welker to start the season on the PUP list.
    =============
Let's have a look at our 53 man roster
    WR Moss, Edelman, Aiken, Stanback

Now let's understand that we need to bring in THREE free agent wide receivers to compete for a couple of roster spots.

Though it was hard to smile today i did manage a smile when I saw Julian run backwards for 2 or 3 steps

... did Welker teach him that one?

Edelman with health will be a top 10 in the NFL in receptions next year. :D

I was at the game and I think Edelman and Slater were the only players on the entire team that acted like it was a playoff game.

Slater stepped up today ... too bad he can't run receiver routes ... but he'll stick here.

Butler also ... he was in another gear today.

He will absolutely look back with disappointment... but there's no way he doesn't realize deep down that he was one of the only Patriot players to show up, give all he had and subsequently be rewarded with the confidence of the rest of the team and coaching staff. I'm sure overall he feels terrible, but it is as good a note for him to end the season on if you end it with a loss. I'm sure he realized what his potential is in this league. That, combined with the kid's amazing work ethic, should result in an excellent offseason for him.

You're right. They were short a receiver all of this year once the Joey Galloway experiment failed. They need multiple receivers.

Think of 2007. Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Gaffney, ... This year?

Also, Faulk is a great veteran but he can't last forever.

Amen. My best-case scenario would be hearing that Edelman splits the next six months between Casa Brady-B√ľndchen and Casa Welker. :)

I wish people would stop calling Edelman our backup slot receiver. It's seriously uneducated. Oh, but because he's white and short, he must be Wes Welker 2...

He's got great vertical speed--he already makes more plays downfield than Welker does. He also has enormous upside, since this is his first year playing WR. If the Patriots limit him to just playing the slot, they're misusing his talent.

The guy definitely has the skillset to play on the outside, as well. He might not be a Donte Stallworth deep threat, but he'll be able to run intermediate routes that Welker doesn't.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

You can believe that Edelman can do more than Welker if you wish. It is NOT an insult to Welker for him to be called mini-Welker or Welker 2. Until his injury, Welker was the best slot reciever in football.

I think it is misguided to depend on Edelman as the deep threat opposite Moss. He does NOT have the needed speed or skillset. We need to sign 3 receivers to compete for that role.

Of course Edleman has an enormous upside. He's never played wide receiver! I suppose we could convert him to a downfield receiver where he would likely fail or we could just keep in his current position of slot receiver.

With Welker injured and not likely to be back until October, Edelman is our STARTING slot receiver, pretty good for a 7th round quarterback who never played wide receiver.

Somehow, I don't think Edelman should or would be insulted to be called a slot receiver who plays much like a younger version of Wes Welker.

I think TheComeback had a more Gaffney-like role (10-15 yard routes before the catch) in mind.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

I get it. At the moment, the team needs someone to replace Welker for at least half the season. That role is slot receiver and Welker should play that role. We need someone else to be a #2 receiver, the long distance threat opposite Moss, the #1, the big TD threat. Both Moss and this new receiver should also be able to go over the middle, especially on intermediate routes. Edeleman as the #3 or slot receiver would have 5-10 catches a game.

We also need a #4 receiver as a change of pace, in spread formations (4 and 5 wides) and in case of injury. Edelman is the #4 when Welker comes back.

    BOTTOM LINE
We need at least one receiver. Two or even three free agent receivers competing for two rosters spots with Stanback on the starting 53 would seem to be the ideal situation.

I agree with your bottom line that we need atleast one WR, possibly 2. I think Edelman proved today that he can be the slot receiver until Welker comes back, but we still need that quality 3rd and 4th WR. I dont think Aiken is any of those guys, Brandon Tate could be, but there is no guarantee with him either.

Then we definitely need to find 2 WR's out there. We can have those 2 and Tate compete for 2 roster spots in training camp.
