Why is that inexcusable?
If you're going to go for it, you MUST call a timeout there. The chances of needing a challenge are minimal esp. since the 2 minute warning is coming up, and only the next play is challengeable.
Biggest play of the game, you call a timeout.
You can criticize them for the two earlier timeouts in which the players and coaches were disorganized, but that would be nuts for Belichick to try it on 4th down without calling a timeout.
I think he got it too. He bobbled the ball initially (which is why the officials didn't just give him forward progress), but he got control at the 30 before he was pushed back.
But the Pats used up all of their timeouts before the 2 minute warning, and couldn't challenge. That's inexcusable.
If the play had happened 8 seconds later it would have been automatically reviewed. But it was just outside the 2 minute warning, and we couldn't challenge.
I wonder how NFL apologist Mike Pereira will defend the call this week.
