Deion Sanders and Mariucci say Faulk got the first down!

Re: D.SANDERS and Mariucci say Faulk got the first down !!

I think he got it too. He bobbled the ball initially (which is why the officials didn't just give him forward progress), but he got control at the 30 before he was pushed back.

But the Pats used up all of their timeouts before the 2 minute warning, and couldn't challenge. That's inexcusable.

If the play had happened 8 seconds later it would have been automatically reviewed. But it was just outside the 2 minute warning, and we couldn't challenge.

I wonder how NFL apologist Mike Pereira will defend the call this week.

Why is that inexcusable?

If you're going to go for it, you MUST call a timeout there. The chances of needing a challenge are minimal esp. since the 2 minute warning is coming up, and only the next play is challengeable.

Biggest play of the game, you call a timeout.

You can criticize them for the two earlier timeouts in which the players and coaches were disorganized, but that would be nuts for Belichick to try it on 4th down without calling a timeout.

Re: D.SANDERS and Mariucci say Faulk got the first down !!

I was watchin the NFL network after the game... They showed the clip about 5 times... I tip my hat off to Dion, he spoke out and said it was a 1st down... side judge had no view of the ball and they show a clip of another side judge runnin down the field gettin ready to mark it 1st and 10...

and he's absolutely right.. the guy with NO view of the play overruled the guy with the BEST view of the play to go against a team with no timeouts on 4th down from their own 30. Absolutely ridiulous call. If anything call it a first down and give Indy the opportunity to challenge if you aren't sure so at least the call is reviewed.

Re: D.SANDERS and Mariucci say Faulk got the first down !!

There's a youtube video where someone goes through a DVR of the play. Honestly, it's not conclusive. There's no video camera positioned right at the 30, it's at an angle so you can't get an accurate read on it. All I can tell you is, it was within one foot of the 30 (on either side). Anything more than that and I'd be guessing.

The angle though comes from the backside and the backside angle usually errs toward the Colts favor in that instance. If the angle was in front of the 1st down line, it would show Faulk was ahead of the line. I did think he definitely made it and it was a bad mark but I agree it was close and perhaps the replay booth would not have changed the spot, since that was the game right there. If the replay booth overturns the call, the Patriots win.

im tellin u, the nfl is set up... im sorrii, someone made a reference about the nfl being the wwe... i love the pats and hope to see them in the superbowl but i got a gut feelin, its gonna be saints vs. colts (two unbeaten teams)... nfl is all about ratings and wat better way...

The head coach, offensive coordinator and QB should be on the same page going into EVERY drive, but especially so on that particular one. They burn a TO on 1st down? WTF moment #1. Then on 3rd down they throw a pass that almost gets pick sixed the other way. Had the OC known BB had planned to go for it on 4th, then a more conservative play call on 3rd would've been called. That way Indy is forced to use their final TO or the clock runs to the 2 minute warning.

Biggest series of the game, you prepare in advance for each scenario.

It's inexcusable to use all 3 of your timeouts before the 2 minute warning of any game, as far as I'm concerned. You handcuff yourself, as we found out to our disadvantage.

Maybe you call a timeout before that play. But we called 2 other timeouts earlier in the 2nd half. Brady called one 3 plays earlier at the beginning of that series.

I don't care what the game or what the situation. You don't burn all 3 timeouts before the 2 minute warning. Piss poor game management.

Bingo. Situational football. Supposed to be our strong suit for just that reason.

Someone help me out here... Why are challenges tied in wit timeouts... I would keep it the way it is but it wont burn out the timeout... or if they do tie it in, if u have no time outs and u lose the challenge then just get flagged for delay of game...

Because they didn't want people challenging every single call.

Re: D.SANDERS and Mariucci say Faulk got the first down !!

Wait, are you saying you punt because of the 1% chance you may need the challenge on the next play?

Couldnt have said it better... people are goin crazii cause it ended up in a lose... but if they would have made it, bill is the smarest coach and yada yada yada...

im sayin, y dont they still keep the 2 challenges and if u get them both right, then u get the 3rd... not changin how many u can challenge...

So what if Sanders and Mariucci said it. Skip Bayless on First and Ten said that Reggie Wayne pushed off on the winning TD and should have been called on offensive interference. I didn't see it, but if Bayless saw it, it must be true. These guys make a living on second guessing and hindsight.

ESPN news had a clip from the front of Faulk on this play. Did anybody see it/freeze frame it? The ball hits Faulk in the chest. It bounces slightly off his chest. He then cradles it firmly with two arms while still in the air. His body is being pushed back by this point but the ball is still on the Colts side of the 30 then his left foot comes down on the 30 yard line.

Didn't see it but the problem is twofold. The inside judge who was closest but behind the play called a bobble he couldn't possibly see and spotted the ball where Faulk landed inside the 30. The judge on the far sideline never called the bobble and was running in to a spot a foot or more beyond the 30. Replay could have been key as it's a spot challenge. Trouble was we couldn't challenge because we were out of TO's and the booth couldn't review the spot because the snap occurred before the 2 min. warning.

But at the end of the night, it doesn't matter...
because good or bad call aside, it stands and we lost.

Yes, but further, and as previsouly stated, it is INEXCUSIBLE to let the ref with the bad view overturn the call of the ref with the good view on a play like that. 99% of the time that is called a first down.

you can watch the nfl head of referees on wednesday trying to justify this call

I looked at the clip. He secures the ball before his foot hits the ground and the ball and his chest are clearly on the other side of the network's gold line. That was a first down.

Who cares where his foot is??? The placement of the ball is what's important - to me it looked like an equal chance that it was on the wrong side of the 30 when he came into possession.

His left foot was on the 30 the body and ball were past the 30.

The problem is that the guy who made the call couldn't see when Faulk had poss cause Faulk had his back to the official.

The offical at the other end of the field should have made the call he was running in to mark it past the 30.

Sanders and Mooch also ripped the PI call on Butler.
