Some may say it may be early to proclaim this,But it appears to me
that Cunningham is heading into the longline of failed Pass Rushing busts to play here.

With Ellis injured, you would think the team wanted to get a little taste of the young player and get more in game experience from the edge, but as a healthy scratch two weeks in a row on a defense that has failed miserably to get a constant pass rush,it has to give you the impression that Cunningham might be a quick out here in NE.

Its not like we have a superb outside edge rush, and if there were others who had to sit you wouldn't think it would be a fairly early draft pick 2 years ago who was finally supposed to provide the rush when McGinest left.

There is a reason why a healthy Cunningham is scratched AGAIN and I don't think its a positive reason.

When I think that this team was a heartbeat away from drafting Carlos Dunlap instead of this scrub,it makes me sick to my stomach, that Dunlap kid is playing lights out and I loved him in the draft.

This is on the coaching staff, they need to figure out WHY players get worse in their system not better... If this was one player, I would call it an aberration but this is clearly a trend, and extremely disturbing one at that.

i would not say that Carlos Dunlap is playing lights out but he is better then Cunningham the pats have not been doing great in the 2th and 3rd round of the Draft the last few years and the biggest problem with that is that they are all ways tradeing down into the 2th round,

i think its time to start useing more first round picks on defense and spending a lil more money on the defense in FA even if it means some of Bradys WR's have to go

He doesn't have a role in the 4-3. He's too small to play LDE. He's not the all-around player that Andre Carter is at RDE and he is apparently not as good a sub rusher as Mark Anderson.

I thought he showed a lot of potential last year, but then the camp reports started from Reiss and it was clear he was not in their plans this year. I don't know whether he still has a place in the 3-4 or if they have just seen enough.

I agree though, there is an odd trend of regression for draft picks. Very strange.

i Understand your upset about cunningham. But to say we aren't doing well in the 2nd and 3rd is a bit much.

2nd rounders: Chung (Starter), Butler, Brace (DL rotation), Vollmer (Pro Bowl), Gronk (Pro Bowler), Spikes (Starter), Cunningham (Starter ion a 3-4... no game time at all in a 4-3... big time regression)

Third round on the other hand is a very different story and we have had alot of misses.

i guess your right i was hopeing cunningham would be a good pass rusher, im not sure why they have had so many missed picks in the 3rd round i know the Draft is a hit or miss but the pats should at lest hit on one just bad luck i guess

How can he be too small for the 4-3 when we reguarly have Ninkovich, a guy who is smaller than him, playing a 4-3 DE role. Maybe hes just not good.

The 4-3 that the Pats are using really only has one pass rush spot. The SLB (Ninkovich) rushes some, but has other more important responsibilities like jamming TEs and dropping into coverage. The LE (Ellis/Deaderick) is just like a 3-4 DE. It's way more of a run defense position than a pass rush position. That leaves the RE spot. Carter is the better all around option and Anderson is the better pure pass rusher. All Cunningham's inactivation tells us is that he is behind those two. Nothing more, nothing less right now.

Hindsight's 20/20. You also loved Aaron Maybin and were 100% positive that he would be a Pro Bowler. I have similar whiffs in my history, too.

Seems to me like Cunningham has the same issue that Spikes does: they were drafted to be 3-4 base LBs, and because of the shortened offseason that isn't the defense that we're playing right now. Dunno what this means going forward, and definitely not an encouraging sign for Cunningham (at least Spikes has made his way onto the field, and Cunningham should be able to too), but I haven't quite given up on him yet.
