Patriots popular overseas?

I am a foreigner and I have no shame in saying that the patriots are the only reason for me to watch the game. Pretty much everything else sucks -the negative attitudes, steroids, outright criminality, the drama and sideshows, excessive numbers of concussions and other injuries, etc.
Sometimes it truly makes me wonder if I am watching a sport or an elaborate reality tv show.

i was the only one probably here in Italy with red t shirt and Pat Patriot on the helmet 30 years ago

and i was so proud to have it - it was a great jersey and i also had a red hat too with Pat and written 'Patriots'...

good old times...:)

You couldn't be more wrong tbh. Since a national television started to show the NFL in my country its popularity sky rocketed. The only thing that most have really get used to is the frequency of ads due to pauses in the game.

But there is a certain kind of fan ... The super bowl fan. Doesn't give a **** about a team doesn't know the rules but when the Super Bowl is playing they pretend to love everything about football.

Personally I started to root for the Pats because there are alot of similarities to my favourite soccer team. I think the "recent" success of the Pats is the reason why they are so popular. In general GB, 49ers and Pats are the most liked teams in the NFL

And where are you from?

You hit on a good point.

The more that goes by, the more it becomes obvious that the Patriots are not just a different TEAM, but a different all around CULTURE.

(except for that murderer TE who is no longer in the culture)

I'm from Australia. I'll never forget Feb 4th 2008, it was a month before I started uni and just woke up at 11am before I was meant to head out and have a few beers with the boys and then meet my GF (who dumped me later that day!). Anyway my brother who works in the medical profession had the day off and was watching the Super Bowl it was the very start of the first drive he told me a bit about the story of the Pats who were 18/0 and Brady who had the greatest season of all time, four hours later as I watched I became enamoured with Brady.

I felt so sorry for the bloke when he lost and I genuinely liked how he handled himself after the loss. Ever since that day I became a Pats fan- to be honest I didn't watch much of the 2008 season after Brady did his ACL in the first game. But I have seen nearly every game of the last 4 seasons what a team- the Pats are probably my equal favorite team with the Hawthorn Football club who I've been a member of since I was 10 and who has one the last three grand finals. There is a huge supporter basis for the Patriots in Aus especially Melbourne - collapsing on the floor in my suit at the pub doing snow angels in people's empty cups of beer when MB made the interception is probably my favorite memory with me reading Adam Schefters' tweet in regards to Brady being free second

You basically summarized it with that one word - culture. That is the most important factor that sets the patriots apart from the rest.

Actually, the Pats are among the Top 3 or 5 favorite teams among NFL fans even right here in America, and have one of the largest "diaspora" followings. I think only Dallas and Pittsburgh have more fans from outside the region where the team is based. Don't let the media hate and comments sections fool you.

True, but the remaining 31 fandoms’ jealousy of the Patriots and years of inbreeding have caused them to coalesce and channel their anger and hatred of the Patriots.

The Patriots are like anchovies ..either you love them or hate them.

I think I’ll call Angela’s and order a large pepperoni and anchovy pizza if they haven’t been closed yet for various shady business violations.

Im one of the few Football supporters that I know of in South Africa as everybody is rugby mad,I like both though. They stopped showing regular season games last year and we can only watch the play-offs. As a result I have to stream the games.

What got me supporting the patriots was the epic Superbowl win against the Rams. That and the PATS are really different from the rest of the NFL. The pats, as with most rugby teams, respect their opponents as you rarely see them airing their views publicly. Its a battle on the field and respect off of it. You don't see trashy Richard Sherman statements from Pats players. Its like most players from the other teams think that they live in their own music video.I dont get it.It comes down to the patriot way.RESPECT

What I did realize from spending time in the US, is that most people don't really know what goes on in the other teams.People read headlines and believe things out of context.American media is the worst thing I have ever witnessed in that respect. Not trying to insult anybody, just saying.
Deflate-gate sums it up really well....I did a experiment and asked some of my friends who dont support any teams(so there was no bias), to read the deflate-gate articles.....They all had one response..THIS IS ******ED...

Everyone loves a winner, unless its your team among those being outclassed

I was just in Copenhagen. Although any signs of NFL fandom were few and far between, I definitely saw more Pats gear than any other team. I probably saw 3-5 hats or jerseys in the week I was there.

I didn't see this elsewhere but thought it was heartening. Maybe foreigners are generally smarter than Americans?

Patriots aren't 'America's Team' but Tom Brady's stardom carries over to Europe where Pats have popularity

I've been to most of EU, Japan, China and India and I have proudly worn Pats apparel running around the city or in a hotel gym. I've gotten smiles, "thumbs-up" and even some great, educated conversation with some folks in the UK.

I have never been engaged in the S__gate or D___gate discussions any other BS accusation levied towards the team.

Are you any good at punting? ;)

I started my support here in the UK in the early 80s. Everyone would take round balls to school but I took an American football. We would play even then tag football, none of us knew what the hell we were doing at the age of 12. I used to listen to the US forces network here late at night on the AM frequency and loved listening to the commentary which was like listening to something happening 5000 miles away unlike today where everything is digital. You know like the grainy pictures of the Olympic games, the world cup. I cherished my Sony Walkman but is was no ordinary one, its had a freakin radio on it. It made me dream for adventure.
I chose the Patriots as my team when they drafted Drew Bledsoe before that I followed a few teams, Bears, Redskins 49ers and Patriots, I thought at the time the Patriots drafting Bledsoe that having the best player in the draft was a sign of greatness. Like I said, l knew little then.
To this day, I think radio commentary of games is 100 times better than TV coverage. I used to be hooked by the lead commentator describing the sounds, the atmosphere, the weather as if I was actually there, but I was snuggled up under my blankets hiding my Walkman hoping not to wake mum or dad.

You cannot beat the days you dreamed when you were a kid. I remember about the time we would get a whole host of American TV shows.. Chips, Fonz, Hawaii five-o, Mork and Mindy, Six million dollar man, and many more, if I was lucky I could stay up to watch Cagney and Lacy lol. Oh we were spoiled back then with tea time shows (6 to 8pm).
:)

I think there is also a huge Miami fanbase in the UK, also both New York teams and the usual iconic teams of years past.

A year ago I was in Australia for 3 weeks. The day I arrived at Sydney airport and just cleared customs, the Patriots-Packers game was kicking off. So I pulled out my laptop, found wifi, pulled up the Patriots game, plugged in my ear buds, and sat down to watch at a seat in the terminal.

It was funny, after awhile I had been approached by 3 different Aussies saying "Hey, are you a Patriots fan?" Anyway, before long I had unplugged the ear buds and was playing the audio over the speakers so we could all hear it together while we watched my laptop.

Alas, we didn't win. But here I was, half a world away from home, in Australia for the 1st time, high-fiving guys I would have never met had it not been for a shared interest in the New England Patriots.

Pats are very popular in Ireland, but then all the Boston teams are. So are Chicago, NY & Philly based teams, because I guess they're the cities where Irish people have spent some time or have relatives. But the Boston teams are far and away the most popular.

Having said that, Patriots lag noticeably behind the Red Sox and Celtics in terms of merchandise over here.

Those idiots over there think that actually watching a sporting event and enjoying it's greatest player is better than spending your entire offseason making excuses and doing everything possible to discredit that player's success, only to get your @ss kicked again when the season starts. I can't stand those British morons. Someday they will come around and realize that what they are watching is not real...there are asterisks everywhere! EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!
