he's a clear 1/2 second too slow in his reads at least...to be honest, he looked WORSE in practice but, AFAIC, he's a JAG backup QB. I mean, yeah, he looks better than Cassel did at the same point in his career but...so what?.

I'm figuring they've got time for him to learn to read post-snap defenses. Brady's got another 6-7 years, after all...

What I found so concerning was even though he was 15-17 in the 2nd, his YPA was awful. And this is when he is facing two rookie cornerbacks, a rookie safety, and an inexperienced 7. This would be no big deal with an ordinary second year backup, but this is our starter for a quarter of the season. I don't believe for a second Brady and the NFL will settle and this case is going to drag on and on. The only hope of Brady starting is if the judge restrains the NFL from making Brady serve his suspension until the conclusion of the case, and I doubt that will happen.

Not hitting the panic button, just saying why not get a vet for insurance? A month is a long time. (And come on now--this is football; you can't just erase the variables you don't like and give him new, imaginary numbers. His performance is what it is.)

I think it's fairly difficult to try and have any of these vets attempt to learn the playbook/system. That makes things a lot harder in my opinion.
What vet specifically? There isn't one out there who isn't hot garbage. I know, what about Mike Vick??

A very good question. If Flynn is recovered soon, he'd likely be the best option.

Part of it is that said veteran will almost certainly not have a job come week 6, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to convince someone to come in under those circumstances.

Another good point to consider.

Lets get a few things straight, take out Boyce and he was 18 of 21 for 140 yards to

James White (possible 3rd down/receiving back)
Brandon Gibson (possible #4 WR)
Jonathan Krause (2nd year, spent last year on the PS)
Chris Harper (Undrafted rookie free agent)

And for the most part a line of Baker-Mason-Andrews-Jackson-Fleming which maybe Mason or Jackson will be a starter this year

All that with probably no real offensive game plan.

Sorry if I'm not hitting the panic button on a 2nd year QB like some seem to be.

Harper was a surprise to me. I haven't watched him or heard much about him until last night. He looked decent.

He had good pocket awareness. He was aware that there was no pocket and he better eat the ball. Really not much else to do except try to give the ball back to the center, who was not Stork, not Wendell, but some guy named Andrews.

It seemed that they were trying to give Boyce a decent chance to earn his spot. JG did under throw Boyce a couple of times which would have resulted in big plays but Boyce did not do himself any favors by dropping a potential first down ball from Brady and not fighting for the ball when in tight coverage.

Overall I didn't lose any confidence in JG but I did lose some hope for Boyce.

For the knee-jerkers coming in here to panic - - your post is the common sense answer.

Don't judge his performance unless he is not getting sacked 7 times in front of a line of 2 rookies and 3 bank tellers while waiting for the guys listed above to get open or hold onto the ball.

I didn't notice Brady shining under that circumstance last night either.

Guys, I think that JG is did pretty good last night. Despite the fact that towards the end the of the game, his line wasn't giving him more than 2 seconds to throw. They were getting manhandled, and I swear they couldn't stop toddlers from getting to him. He had a bunch of ill advised throws to Josh Boyce, but once he started picking out his other receivers, his numbers were great.

Jimmy G's performance reminded me of his game vs. the Bills, as in, scrap it. I'm biased, but it's tough to evaluate his performance with Boyce starting most of the game. He is AWFUL.

It says a ton about Boyce when a 21 yr old UDFA comes in at WR and Jimmy G gets comfortable.

Did Jimmy G struggle vs. the Bills last year? Sure. Brady also went 8/16 with a 64.6 QBR. Brady also started tonight off 1/4 thanks to Boyce. I'm not sure how Tom woudl have done if he played the whole game with that crew out there.

If Dobson or Tyms can get out there for preseason week 2, Jimmy G will look much better. Anyone but Boyce!

@RyanHannable: Brady/Garoppolo to Josh Boyce: 2-for-11, 19 yards.
Brady/Garoppolo to everyone else: 16-for-20, 133 yards.

I remembered Matt Cassel being wayyyyyy worse than jimmy in preseason and he still won 11 games. I think we're ok.

I missed a lot of the game, but the parts I saw of Jimmy G it was hard to evaluate him. I thought he looked really good in the pocket and had confidence and knew how to check off receivers. The problem is he had garbage to throw to and the o-line sucked. I would like to see him get some reps with Edelman and Amendola next week to see what he can really do.

As my post above showed he still did alright when he wasn't going to Boyce and it wasn't until the bottom of the roster OL (Kline (playing C), Devey, Hauptmann, Groy and Asper) came in where the protection got really bad.

I wasn't impressed with the o-line at all. I give them a pass since they had three starters out (four if you assume Wendell will be the opening night starter) and there were two rookie starters last night. They weren't a disaster, but they were mediocre.

JAG struggled tonight, no question. It's going to be about post-snap reads with him.

The INT he threw being a nice example. He had no business throwing that ball to Boyce. The CB (don't recall who he was off the top of my head) had pretty nice position. I have to wonder how much of his struggles were due to the fact that he felt he had to speed up those reads due to the OL's inability to consistently protect him and how much of it was due to Garoppolo.

There's a very important thing called "context".

Have you any idea with whom he was lining up tonight?

How many OL starters? Hmmm, let's also look.......no Blount, Edelman, Gronk, Chandler, Lafell.......
But then who was he lined up AGAINST? I doubt it was the first team defense of GB.

It hurt to watch most of the time, but I was OK with JG's performance, particularly with the kinds of playes they woul dbe asking form him in a regular season game..........the short stuff

boyce was a wrench in everyone's spokes last night

Contextually his performance is what it is with players who would backups the first four weeks or more than likely not even in the league. He had good moments and not so good moments. Some his fault others someone else blew an assignment. He needs to learn from his mistakes and progress. The kid has talent and desire let's sit back and see where it takes him. As for bringing in a vet......why? If he was that good why is vet X unemployed at this point-in-time?

Jimmy G missed his guy Brian Tyms. I noticed Jimmy G throws off his backfoot a little too much---he gets a bit too much air under his passes.

For such an inexperienced player, perhaps Jimmy G threw the ball too much yesterday. Maybe they should have pounded the rock a bit more, and let the run set up the pass for Jimmy G

But then who was he lined up AGAINST? I doubt it was the first team defense of GB.

Two rookie cornerbacks, a rookie safety, and an inexperienced 7. Guy who intercepted him was an undrafted rookie free agent.
