Why does everyone assume Browner starts over Dennard?

Three women go to Vegas and decide to split the cost of a single hotel room to save money. The room costs twenty five dollars. Each of the women give's the man at the front desk a ten dollar bill.

For some reason, the man does not have the correct bills to give change. He promises he will send up Ted the bellhop with the five dollars the hotel owes them.

The clerk gives Ted the bellhop five one dollar bills with stern instructions to divvy it up between the three guests and to not get into trouble on the way up. On the ride up to the women's floor, Ted can't figure out how to divide the five ones between the three women so with a shrug he pockets the remaining two one dollar bills.

Now, each woman paid with a ten dollar bill and each got a one dollar bill back from Ted. That's nine dollars per woman. If nine times three equals twenty seven dollars and you add two that Ted the bellhop kept for himself, that equals twenty nine dollars.

Where did the other dollar go?

misleading final statement. the actual cost for the room is 25, That divided by 3 is 8.33. This means that is what each woman actually paid. The fact that 3x9 = 27 is not important cause that is not what happened here. it is actually 8.33x3 + 3 + 2 (which Ted took).

nice try Bob, but...no..the women paid 30 dollars and got three back...that is 9 dollars apiece no matter how you try to slice it.The actual cost of the room and what the women paid are two different ,distinct amounts.

I never said Ryan played better. My point was Ryan wasn't as bad and Dennard wasn't as good as Deus Irae makes it seems.

You've been arguing against something completely obvious, and doing a poor job of it. Post #45 recapped it. To reiterate:

You asked

Why does OP assume Dennard will be ahead of Ryan? As of right now Ryan is still a CB.

Dennard was clearly ahead of Ryan when last they played, as per the depth chart. Assuming that he would start out ahead of Ryan is a sensible position as a result.

Since I didn't "makes it seems" any way at all, I'll just say that your point fails.

Dennard has four weeks to make a case for

being the CB2
being the CB3

The ball's in his court.
Dennard can indeed make a case by his play. However, it seems very unlikely that in Game 5, Browner will be relegated to being a backup. He is no nickel back. So, either he is the #2 CB or he sits on the bench.

For me, Dennard is making his case with regard to the nickel position. Will he beat out Arrington, or not?

Probably because Dennard was atrocious against D Thomas.

With Browner having to work his way back into things after the suspension, we could certainly see something like Dennard on the outside in a 2 CB set and shifting inside in a 3 CB set and Browner coming in on the outside. Depending on how that worked out, we could then see it on a more permanent basis.

Absolutely.

To answer the OP's question, I think a lot of the assumptions (right or wrong) are made due to Browner's reputation and overall ability, particularly with jamming receivers at the line. He's got excellent size, is very physical, and was a relatively expensive "middle tiered" type of signing. Those traits alone lead many to believe that he'll be seeing the field more often than not.

I don't know who/where these CBs will line up or how much they'll play, but I liken this problem to needing new brakes on my Audi (that I no longer have ;) ). It's a good "problem" to have, and a great position to be in for our secondary, since I believe that we've greatly improved on our depth, talent, and competition.

this is why you go to training camp...to answer these questions.I just upgraded my camera option to a Samsung Smart Cam (no plug intended). It's got a nice wide angle view and plenty of hard drive storage for vids as well as pics. The problem is getting the right angle on each unit as they practice reps. There's a few members here who do a smashing job every year and I expect the same this season. The best thing to do is go with a few other friends who live for the sport and break down the practices with each person concentrating on a specific area. Last year I went to a ton of workouts and focused primarily on the punting unit and the WR's, yet I couldn't help but notice Collins and Hightower in drills with the D units.

Watching real time competition during camp is crucial IMO to formulating a cogent idea of where the team is as a whole and individually. Last year, the media never picked up on the obvious battle going on and being WON by Ryan Allen over Zoltan. I'd say 90% of this board scoffed at the notion that Ryan had any chance at all when I relayed what I was SEEING every practice.Longer hang time. noticeably better distance, better control...it was right there day after day yet most refused to believe it. The sports press was too busy looking up star players skirts and establishing their pecking order to really do any valuable reporting. Curran stood out as the best source for real camp info by a mile and I believe he was the only one who reported that Allen was outkicking Mesko.

So, if you ARE a rabid, die hard Pats fan, do yourself a favor. Take a few sick days, tell the wife you're going to buy a lawn tractor in Mansfield and leave her to shop at the Crossing while you "check it out", take the grand kids...just go there and WATCH a few sessions. You can pick what you want to watch as they have morning and afternoon sessions. The best part is it is FREE. These days, in the Goodelliverse of Ever Increasing Revenue Streams, preseason camp is a B-A-R-G-A-I-N

I won't be able to make it. Unfortunately, "vet minimum" doesn't seem to be a thing in my line of work :(

But like always, I'm looking forward to your observations from TC, Joker.

I would prefer to put the more physical Dennard on Welker and have him play rough with Wes. In addition, I think that Sanders is a better matchup with Arrington because Dennard is not as fast as Arrington, which is not ideal when going against Sanders.
The issue with that is Dennard is not a good slot corner. He struggles big time covering crossing routes and playing in space. Welker would eat him alive. Dennard is a physical corner who is best used on the outside where he can use the sideline to his advantage. If he was 3 inches taller, he would dominate.

Did you just make all this up?

Don't have exact stats, but the Patriots were in the nickel more than 50% of snaps last year. We will see a lot of 3 CBs out there.
I think from a secondary view, its all about matchups. Revis will take the #1 WR without a doubt. but then, I see Browner taking the next biggest WR and then Dennard will take the slot guy or a smaller outside WR.

Like vs. Denver: Revis-D. Thomas, Browner- J. Thomas, Dennard- W.Welker
vs. Chicago: Revis-B.Marshall, Browner- A. Jeffery, Dennard- slot guy
vs. Miami: Revis- M. Wallace, Browner- C. Clay, Dennard- B. Hartline
vs. Colts: Revis- Nicks, Browner- Wayne, Dennard- TY Hilton
vs. Packers: Revis- Nelson, Dennard- Cobb, Browner- Boykin
vs. Lions: Revis- Megatron, Dennard- Tate, Browner- Pettigrew

You get the point. Revis takes the #1 and from there its matchups. Dennard was abused last year by D. Thomas after Talib went out. Dennard can cover smaller quicker guys and medium sized guys. Tape says Browner struggles vs. smaller speed guys but loves being physical so he can get dominant TEs and taller WRs. So its all about what the other team has

Exactly, its all about the matchups. Browner's size and physicality match up nicely against teams like Chicago, San Diego or Buffalo who will throw two large bodied, physical WRs that typically overmatch our traditionally smallish CBs.

I'm afraid I live way too far away, but if I lived in Boston I would love to go to these training camps. I'll just have to rely on your excellent training camp posts.

.....By the way, did you notice that everyone else was completely oblivious to your math interplay with Dangerzone? Too bad, it was by far the most fun part of this tread. I figured that at least PWP (another scientist/engineer type) would weigh in. ;)

The question to be answered is whether Dennard is better inside than Arrington.

I think there are really 4 questions to be answered:

  1. Is Dennard better outside than Browner?
  2. Is Dennard better outside than Browner on some starting matchups?
  3. Is Dennard better inside than Arrington?
  4. If Ryan stays at CB, is he worth bringing up as part of the mix looking for a significant role?

I would then add a 4a. If Ryan stays at corner, who will move to safety after Game 4 or 5?
