Report: Mallett not going to be traded

Why do people think this kid is so good? He hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in the preseason...

I guess sometimes people forget that if Brady retires in two years Mallett will be a 28 years old 6th season QB that has never played a meaningful Down in the NFL
Dontcha think that if Mallet was a world beater that we would know by now?

Every season 1 team supposedly is very interested in him, but passes and says no thanks.

What about a player for player trade that had been worked out ahead of time. I would trade Mallet for Reed now that we have drafted Garopollo.

That's seems like the only option at this point, but if that happens. It will likely occur during the season, due a injury or suspension, because asides from the Texans, as of right now, they is no demand for QB.

A second option is a post draft trade to the Texans that was put in place before the draft. No need to announce now and the more cards you hold close the better. I could see a trade for a 2015 low of a 6 to a high of a 2 depending on performance.

I'd bet that Houston took Fiedorowicz with the expectation that either him or Ryan Griffin were part of a trade for Mallett.

Maybe the Patriots should host a pro day for Mallet. :D

I have to say I think the texans are doing the right thing by staying away from grabbing a QB this year. The second a new coach picks "his" QB he starts the clock on his job.

I have posted similar thoughts, to closed ears.

I have a hard time seeing how much better Mallett could be than the other 3-4 journeyman QBs they currently have on their roster in Fitzpatrick, Yates, Keenum, etc, but anything's possible. I could see it going either way, but if I had to bet, I would guess that he stays. Obviously, I could be way off.

EDIT: Brooks Reed.

I'm assuming that there is another Reed in play that I'm just not thinking of, which is my bad, because it's late. I would imagine that if I looked through the HOU roster, I'd find another Reed who you're referring to.

One last thought is that it typically takes the new rookie at least one full season to learn our complicated offense before Belichick feels comfortable enough keeping as our main backup, so the drafting of Garoppolo may/may not have much to do with anything about Ryan Mallett, other than the fact that we had to prepare ourselves since he's definitely leaving at the end of the year (if not sooner). The one exception to this was in 2009 when BB felt comfortable enough to keep Hoyer as a rookie, but that was a big gamble, and more so due to the failure of the 2008 3rd round draft pick of Kevin O'Connell, who wasn't working out, and was a rare occasion of cutting someone after only one year that was drafted that high.

At this point, Garoppolo has to be the backup moving forward (and perhaps the starter a couple years down the road). It would have been better for the Pats if they'd traded Mallett before showing their hand with that pick, but what's done is done. At this point, just get whatever you can for him. Any pick that they can get back will basically count against what they gave up from Garoppolo, as I see it. Considering what backup QBs go for in FA these days, I'm not totally against using mid-round picks for guys that you develop into depth QBs. Add in the potential for the guy to turn into a starter, and I like it. I still dislike the pick since I think all draft capital should be going toward buidling a team that Brady can win a 4th SB with in the immediate future, but if this is the hand that we're working with then let's at least get a pick for Mallett.

Mallett's the NFL version of the NBA's Josh Smith. He'll get traded to the Texans as soon as Smith goes to the Celtics.

Either they already have the base of a deal in place with another team, I'm guessing---or they are going to do what they usually do and allow the new rookie a year to develop and learn the system before depending on him for our backup spot.

Either way, I'm not so sure that they lost anything by tipping their hand. Actually, I'm not even 100 percent convinced that Mallett is definitely going to be moved, although it's obviously a possibility.

I haven't followed NBA hoops since I stopped betting, so I'm not sure if you're referring to the situation of exploring Mike Glennon or not?

I do find it interesting that both rumors that linked Mallett to HOU and Glennon here have been put to rest in certain circles, although some still keep fanning the flames of Mallett leaving, especially since we took a new QB tonight.

Who the heck is "Reed?" I don't imagine that you're talking about Ed Reed, the guy who went to the Jets from Houston, who is now a free agent who no one wants? The guy who absolutely sucked last year, who the Ravens didn't want anymore, and who Belichick didn't show the slightest interest in?

It dawned on me while I was brushing my teeth buddy. I was just coming back to edit real quick before I went to bed. Thanks, man :)

I'm not as sure that we'd be able to pull in players as well as picks, as I've kind of expected something in the range of a 3rd/4th for Mallett myself, but we'll have to see. Maybe a straight up deal has been proposed earlier in the thread.

True dat. It's actually pretty funny how teams deliberately use the media to spread disinformation, and how much the media laps it all up. :D

I have zero doubt whatsoever that the Patriots would trade Mallett if the right deal came along so to say he is "not available for trade" is absurd. The only question mark is whether or not that "right deal" appears anytime in the next 48 hours.

You're right..but unless that right deal is a high second or first rounder (which it will never be) then it's just not going to happen.

I have every doubt. For a third or fourth rounder you are not going to trade your only backup for a rookie in the draft.

That's called stupidity at its highest level.
