Tough Night For Patriots: Fletcher, Lockett, Woodhead Banged Up

He got hit really hard today. you have to assume he has a concussion. he got up very slowly, walked toward the bucs sideline and looked completely out of it. i really hope he is ok. he is a phenomenal player and gives our offense another dimension

One of the cheapest hits I've seen in a while. Meanwhile, the Bucs sideline guy was going nuts for it minutes later, talking with LaGarrette Blount about it for most of the Q & A. That's a fine and a BIG one. And it's a LOSER to move to point to that as something "inspiring" for the team.

To elaborate on what I said in the game thread: I hope that #%@% never plays another down in the NFL.

If he does, though, it's gonna be a while before he gets paid.

Ummmmmmm...isn't Woody on offense..last time I checked RB's were offensive players....

I didn't think it was particularly cheap. He was right there in he play near he returner. It didn't look like the guy intentionally led with his helmet or anything.

Now we just have to hope that it's an Aaron Rodgers concussion and not a Mike Wright concussion.

Just read in Mike Reiss' Rapid Reaction that Woodhead was smiling on the bench at the end of the game. (Hopefully not because he thinks he's Batman)

Doctor Gill was laughing as he finished his evaluation on the bench. And Bill just actually acknowledged he saw Danny in the locker room and he looked OK. I'm sure they will be careful with him this week, but I think he dodged a bullitt serious concussion wise.

Intention has nothing to do with it. The rule is what you cannot do, not what you intended to do.

And it needn't be a helmet hit. Blind-side hits are no longer allowed to be made to the head of the blocked player with ANY part of the blocker.

When the head of the guy you hit snaps back, it's pretty clear that it was a bad hit.

There isn't a need for it. You can block a guy just as effectively shoulder-to-shoulder, especially when he isn't looking your way, had no idea you are there, and is not protecting himself from the hit in any way.

I was livid when I saw that hit, and him laying there not moving for a few seconds. That he good get up at all after that hit is a testament to how tough he is and how well conditioned he is as a football player.

Fortunately, he's got another 2+ weeks to clear his head before the team will really need him available.

I'm sure I'll see it on replays tomorrow. I don't really disagree with anything you said, but I wouldn't call it a cheap hit based on my impression from the game. When I think cheap, I think intentional (which you point out has nothing to do with NFL rules). My impression of this was it was right in the middle of an odd play that changed direction in an uncommon way.
