Pats sign David Patten

Patten is one of my favorite players from this decade and his moments in out titles were awsome.

My best memory is the SB36 TD catch. I was at the game and we were on the far side of the field and the way he came down it was questionable whether he was in and it was challenged somehow from the opposite side of the stadium I clearly saw his hand touch in bounds before the second leg hit out of bounds so I knew the play was a TD and excitedly tried to confirm this to my father who was freaking out. I was so confident it was a TD.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that they wanted to bring someone in who could be a team leader. I would love to see him give us one last hurrah but even the biggest Patten fan which I am has to think we could do better.

:ugh:

Loved him back in the day, but hopefully it's a 1 day thing so he can retire as a Patriot.

-- Unconscious fumble recovery (touched ball while out of bounds) vs Bills

I'm still in shock over that one. Out cold and still had a hand on the ball. Never saw it before and haven't seen it since.

David Patten is still one of only a few players player in NFL History to Run for a TD,Pass for a TD, and Catch a pass for a TD in the same game.He always had good chemistry with Tom Brady and I'm sure He signed for the minimum so it doesn't cost the Patriots anything to take a look at Him. He was always a Pro's Pro who knows The Patriot Way. A Character Guy for a Team right now that can use some.

There's no way David Patten makes this team.

Ahhh. Nothing like a good old trip down memory lane.

You must admit, though, that this is quite the perplexing move. I guess the front office believes that Patten still has some juice left.

He's 3 years younger then Galloway if that says anything

Patten became the first player in franchise history and only the sixth player in the NFL since 1960 to record a touchdown pass, touchdown reception and rush for a touchdown in one game (at Indianapolis, 10/21/01). He completed a 60-yard touchdown pass, caught two touchdown passes (91 and six yards) and rushed for a 29-yard score. Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton was the last player to accomplish the feat on Oct. 21, 1979 vs. Minnesota.

And, the scary one:

Led all Patriots receivers with five touchdown receptions in 2002, including his game-winning tiptoe reception in the back of the end zone with 28 seconds remaining to give the Patriots a 33-30 victory over Chicago (11/10/02).

I don't think you can take a player many years removed from this team and all of a sudden be a locker room presence or a leader on a team he was not a part of last season.

I think leadership and locker room leaders must be on the roster the past few years like Mayo,Brady,Light,Welker ect: guys who have been here the past couple of years,Patten would be a guy who would not make a commotion and be a positive guy but as a leader?,dunno.

Maybe we signed him to mentor the young WR's in Training Camp

That sounds about right. Maybe we're going to have too many of them for Brady and the WR's coach to handle. And maybe we want a veteran presence on the practice field with them who actually knows what it takes to win...

Yeah, the good ol' days, when everything just went right for the Patriots. Maybe they'll keep him around as a good luck charm, rub his head before every series, that sort of thing.

Nope. From Mike Reiss' blog: "Since Patten was out of football in 2009 after being cut by the Cleveland Browns, it would be a stretch to call him a lock for a roster spot. But this isn't one of those sign-and-retire type contracts. The Patriots saw enough of Patten in a workout to believe he could possibly help -- at the very least in offseason work."

If this is a joke, its not funny

If this is real, BB really needs to stop the hire the old guy at value sh!t...its not working

Moss better be the oldest WR on this team opening day.....seriously

I am one of the biggest Patten fans and even I think we could do better.

But I do find it hilarious that people and maybe you were not one of them but people called us out for getting rid of key guys from our titles last year and a lack of leadership and than we sign someone who would fall into that category and that all you hear is this guy is too old we need to get younger blah, blah, blah.

Actually this kind of does make some sense. We have our number one WR in Moss and I plan on getting Welker at some point this year so that is your top two. Tate and Edelman can fight for 3 and 4. We can bring in one or two guys to fight with Edelman and Tate for 3 and 4 and to fill in at 2 until Welker is ready. But with Moss and Welker anyone you bring in likely wont be much better that Edelman or Tate so why not bring in a guy like Patten to battle it out with those guys for the final few spots. He has good knowledge of the system, is a good leader, good guy, and who knows maybe with rested legs he can squeeze out one more productive year.

maybe his mentoring was the key to Branch's success? (on limb)

Reality says when a WR reaches 35 he is nothing more than a roster filled spot

Look at 2 of the greatest WRs of all time...Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison, both hit the wall in thier mid 30s and these two will never be mentioned in the same sentence as Patten.

I loved what Patten offered us as a mid 20s WR,I think this is fodder time for BB more than anything.

I really think it's a simple thing:

Sam Aiken
Isaiah Stanback
Matt Slater

I think we can expect the Patriots to dig up corpses if they have to, in order to improve that group. Patten will be good for OTAs, if nothing else, as he shows the young players how the Patriots want them to work. I also expect that Branch will eventually be released, and that the Patriots will bring him in for a look, as well, if they can find agreeable financial ground.

Nice. When will they be bringing in Shawn Jefferson?

Thats ridiculous....He has a good knowledge of the system and will be able to lead guys who don't in film rooms and workouts. Sure he has things to pick up too as things have changed. But the guy knows the Patriot way is a hard worker to say he wouldn't be a leader if he makes this team or even just in the offseason is ridiculous.

How did Rodney become team captain his first year here then? There is no rules as to how locker room leaders are assigned. And I would think that any reciever on this team would listen to what Patten has to say due to his success, time spent, and knowledge in the system.

after wrapping up Stephan Starrings contract first.
