Ellis Hobbs - Duane Starks in disguise

I have read it and I understand it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the goal of our defense is to allow a completion on every play.
Everyone needs to stop thinking the other poster is automatically being ridiculous and extreme. I'm not saying we aren't going to win a game with Hobbs at CB. I'm just saying if you look at how strong the rest of our team is, it's pretty obvious (and has been since 2005) that the CB position is the weakest part of the defense.

Your last statement proves you don't know what you are talking about. Sorry, you don't. The weakest part of the defense during the 2005, 2006, and 2007 seasons was the LINEBACKER position. Since you need a reminder, it was during those seasons that the Pats had 1 major injury at that position and it hurt the defense immensely. In 2005, it was Bruschi's stroke and TJ's concussion issues. In 2006, the Pats lost Seau with 6 weeks remaining and they couldn't sustain. In 2007, they lost Colvin.

Now, in 2005, the Pats also did have a merry-go-round in the secondary, having 7 guys go onto the IR during the 1st 6 weeks. But that is something you just can not plan for. I don't care how good of a coach you are.

Also, during the AFCG against the Colts in 2006, not having a LB who was able to contend with Dallas Clark allowed the Colts to have a field day.

I can understand your frustration about Hobbs, though I do not agree with you. You do need to stop exaggerating and you need to get your facts straight.

You are right and we are wrong because...

It isn't the sky is falling, it is the inability of the secondary to stop a 5 yard out. It is the inability of Ellis Hobbs to defend anybody. It is the idea that they looked so bad last night, in large part due to the fact that Ellis Hobbs was abused last night.

If the defense that is called requires the DB to give more than a 5 yards cushion, how is that the DB's fault? Guess what, its not. Learn the game.

Look at last years games, he played the same distance off the line, with much the same success. It is no coincidence that the only game that they lost last year was a game that they didn't get to the QB. It is also no coincidence that Ellis was 10 yards away from the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Oh yeah, he was hurt, I forgot. You know what pisses me off about that, it was the fact that the first time we heard about it was when he used it as an excuse.

Actually, it wasn't. The first time we heard about it was the injury reports when he was listed as probable. We also heard about it when he underwent the 2 surgeries to correct the different issues.

And, before you go blaming Ellis, how about you look at the previous TD that was allowed. You know. The one by Asante. He wasn't within 10 yards of Tyree. Or how about the interception that Samuel dropped. Yeah, forget about those. Just claim the entire loss was on Hobbs and forget about the pass break-ups that he made that would have made the loss even worse.

You seriously are a few cans short of a 6-pack. And I think that is being generous to you.

I heard a stat from espn radion on Hobbs that made me sick. Most yards given up per a reception at 9.6 yards the most given up in the NFL by a DB. I checked the NFL web site for INT stats and Hobbs is in the same area with DL.

I seen Otis Smith and Pool both play that side a hell of alot better than Hobbs has played it.

Would Hobbs be able to play as well as Smith did in the Rams SB? I think with Hobbs in the game, Pats get beat.

I am not a Hobbs fan at all and for the Hobbs fans out there what does he do good. Name it.

So you checked the NFL Website and because Hobbs didn't have a great number of interceptions, he's a bad player?

And how do you know that ESPN Radio is working with the correct stats? I've seen them spout off numerous times with the wrong information.

Hobbs is just a kick return guy...He doesn't do wut good CB do and that's get picks and break up passes. All he does is tackle after completion. The only thing i think he does well is covering deep. Hobbs has never had a gr8 game 4 us except the game where he was falsely accused of pass interferance against Wayne in the AFC championship which we lost.

I haven't read Box_O_Rock's post yet on Hobbs, but didn't Belichick more or less say: Well, we came out and allowed a 12-play, 70-yard march down the field, and that's not where we want to be...

Edit: I apologize, Box_O's analysis was that Hobbs was Mayo, Woods and Meriweather security blanket. Which would explain (and I took it to be Hobbs' playing so far back) why Mayo was there first on the receiver a few times. My bad. I was ripping on Hobbs last night.

Well, the theory of a zone defense is that you can stop them on third down. You give up 3-5 yards on a passing play and you hope that they are only successful on one of the first two downs and set up a 3rd and long and stop them there. Although they allow more of the 3-5 yard plays in a soft zone, they don't expect the opposing offense to pick up 3-5 yards on every play.

Blaming Hobbs exclusively on the fact that the Bucs went 70 yards on 12 plays would be a gross exaggeration. Although the Pats play a soft zone that gives up the short passes a lot of the times, their run defense is not designed that way.

Hobbs is the team's #1 cornerback. Learn to deal with that.

guys this is a few years now that his play has been weak at best. he made a few good plays during the AFC championship two years ago but beyond that he's been a liability.

he's not very good. neither is maroney. eventually people are going to realize that. hope i'm wrong.

thank u very much about Maroney.. he is excellent with screens, but average as a RB. He likes waitin for holes 4getin if he doesn't just push for wuteva he can get, he'll get tackled. If not that he is a 1st rd pick, i'll trade him, Jackson and Hobbs for the best CB I can get or a draft pick

Whoa! A genius like yourself should apply for a 7 figure job as an NFL GM.

Flattering but Pioli is better than me. He doesn't always make the best choices but no one is perfect.

Hobbs has been consistently bad. I'm not a coach, not a GM, but he's been the weak link since 2006. I think a lot of people are hung up on him because he was a high point in an atrocious 2005 defensive year, but he got burned in 06 all the time, and last year wasn't much better. He's going to be covering number one guys week in and out this year, and I'm worried.

I don't think the sky is falling. It's been a lackluster preseason but they'll pull it together, I'm not worried about that. I do think, though, that unless AD can work effectively with Vrabel as a rusher on the edge and that the front 3 can get back to form with consistent pressure, he's going to get exposed, and badly.

Not much doubt about that.

People were *****ing in almost every regular season game of a 16-0 season. What exactly do you expect will be learned by that sort of person?

Hopefully humility.:p
