Serious offers for Cassel yet? [mergedx2]

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

Why waste pre-season reps showcasing someone to get a 5th or 6th. I'd rather use the preseason to develop players we intend to keep. That being said, we need three quarterbacks, so there is no particular reason to cut Cassel until late in preseason. And BTW, we are making the presumption that Belichick want to keep Gutierrez this year instead of Cassel. There may a roster fight. The new guy is the #3 developmental/emergency QB.

I don't doubt for one second that there'd be interest involving a low draft pick. The guy has played behind the best QB and for the best coach in the league. Someone surely would offer at least a 6th rounder IF he plays well in the pre-season.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

all i know is we need to use the franchise tag on him when his deal is up.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

How many #1 picks? Sounds like you've been living in a fantasy world, Fantasia.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

I love the people taking him seriously. I actually enjoy this board's man-love for Matt Cassel in the face of overwhelming evidence that he sucks.

Oh, that's nothing compared to the Chad Jackson love. Man, if the Pats traded him now, the Patsfans.com-ers would demand at least 4 or 5 first round draft picks.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

So 2 #1s is cheap.

Exactly, which is why I say hold firm for four #1s.
Of course, none of these first round picks will the Pats use to draft a LB and Vic Hobson is really a great LB and the long term solution.

Matt Cassel means little to me in the grand scheme since he's a rarely used backup, but what is this overwhelming evidence?

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

In hindsight, the best case scenario last year would have been to lose a game at some point in the regular season, save for the last game of the reg, so that we could have given Cassell some extended pt. Had he gotten 4-8 quarters under his belt in say, games 14-16, he might have been marketable ala Matt Shuab. Someone may have taken a flyer on him. Now, he's maybe a 6th/7th round trade chip, if anything at all.

Has he done anything his entire career? He doesn't even look particularly good in the preseason, and he hasn't played a meaningful snap since high school (and when he got the chance to, he threw a pick six). Rumor had it Matt Guttierez had unseated him as top backup last year. Now the Patriots draft a QB to replace him. He might not suck, per se, but he's obviously not some Steve Young-type superstar stuck behind one of the all-time greats like many on this board insist upon, and it seems highly unlikely that he's even a serviceable backup. This team, and every other team in the league, can do far better than Matt Cassel as a backup, let alone a starter. Talk about him as trade bait, but I doubt he'll even be signed if he's cut. The "Patriots trash is every other team's gold" theory didn't work for Rohan Davey, did it? And he was MVP of NFL Europe and yadda yadda.

Well, in college he was behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. In the NFL, he's been behind Tom Brady. I don't know that he's Steve Young, but he's been stuck behind 3 of the "all time greats" at their level (2 college QB's drafted in the top 10 of their respective drafts, 1 NFL QB).

As for the backup, how can you say that given the current level of information we have? His career numbers are:

22 for 39 for 253 yards, with a 1:1 td/int ratio and a 71.8 rating.

Vince Young wishes his numbers were as good as Cassell's. Now, that may say more about Young than Cassell, but Cassell's only thrown 39 passes in the league.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

I think they'll trade Cassel. Maybe 2 #1s.

For all the nay-sayers out there, Cassel's probably better than Ryan and he was a 3rd pick.

So 2 #1s is cheap.

I'd hold out for three number ones and a couple of cheerleaders.

Don't Bogart that joint.

OK #1 GMs san count to four. They know a Patriot QB WILL be cut. If, say, Matt Millen wants to convert Cassel to a Wide Receiver he can wait and trade nothing.

#2 The guy's last start was in High School. Other than a Matt Millen type of moron, no one has seen anything impressive. Heck, even AJ Feely had a few good games. If Cassel was in it was junk time

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

I can't believe this thread.

Cassel is Brady's backup. Nothing is going to change that in 2008.

Gutierrez is likely gone.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

Cassel will be on the bullet train out of here. Do they even have him in camp or just cut him now?

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

If only he had made the touchdown saving tackle on Z. Thomas after throwing that interception he would be worth 3 #1 picks.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

Most of his throws came against teams when they were hugely demoralized and down by about thirty points. Not that I think he's any good, but Vince Young has actually started games and been forced to play from behind and in a situation where failure is possible, and the sample size is much larger. It's apples and oranges.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

Cassel and another backup QB are sweating their pans right now. If Cassel goes, Jets will pick him up because of Margini.

He's going to beat out one of Pennington, Clemens, or Ainge? Don't think so.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

Do you think that pats will keep TB as long as they can.? If TB asks too much for his contract , BB will show him the door as he did to another QB a few years ago.

i'm comfortable that TB is on the team for now.

Re: How many #1 picks for Cassel?

If the pick we get for him is higher than the 7th we paid for him then he added value to the team. I think we can pry a 5th for sure and possibly a 4th if they're desperate which means we won by taking him.
