Great news!

Here's Scout Inc's take:

Grade 64
Expert's Take: Hobson is a powerful, hard-nosed linebacker who fits well in New York's 3-4 defensive scheme. He's short, thickly built and has great lower-body strength. He has excellent power and explosiveness to take on defenders. He has good short-area quickness and balance, making many plays in traffic. He's instinctive and reacts well to get good fits at the line of scrimmage. He has a great motor and makes many plays on second and third efforts. He uses his hands effectively in block protection, separates well and is active getting after the ball. He is limited in coverage and can exploited in man-to-man schemes. He lacks good speed to cover running backs and top tight ends, though he can be effective in short zone schemes. Hobson is one of the better linebackers available in free agency, and it will take a solid contract offer to keep him around.

He's 28 years old! He's ancient! We're all going to die!

Looks like we're going CB in the draft.

And this is a great signing for us.

Just like the old days when BB first arived here, signing JETS castoffs! Back to the Future!

I like the FA move very much. Allows more decision flexibility on draft day.

If thy select a CB in the first round, I bet a trade down would have come first. I think Hobson will see time at ILB, so they could still select a pass rushing OLB in the first or second round.

Hobson is a good ILB. He'll contribute, which is what the Pats need from any ILB signings. Good signing.

Regards,
Chris

Limited in coverage and can get exploited in man-to-man? He's got Pats ILB written all over him! ;)

I disagree with that from what Ive seen of him though. I think his pass D will be a plus in our system.

It is a great signing, but signing Fernando Bryant didn't mean they weren't going to draft a CB and signing Hobson doesn't mean they will.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm sure we'll draft a CB; I don't think this makes it any less likely that we'll take an LB in the first round.

No, you're right. It doesn't mean they will, but the probability is a little higher for CB than it is for LB just because the defensive backfield is still a little more suspect than the LB corps. And am I the only one with reservations when it comes to Hobbs being our number 1? This guy has gotten burned by every good WR in the league (specifically Plaxico Burress in the Super Bowl).

If he learned anything and can play anything like his former teammate Johnathan Vilma then he will be the deal of the offseason.

Not my personal assessment. I'm going by what two different scouting reports highlight as his major weakness.

Appears to be a good signing, Hobson can play in the Pats scheme and with a 1 year deal he will be playing to earn a big paycheck next year.

That may be true but now I think the team looks to the offensive line as perhaps a surprise 1st pick at #7 in the draft since the right side of the OL appears to be weakest link on the team at least on paper at this point

Clady? ...

ILB and CB are still weaker, IMO.
