Belichick catches Shula

Perhaps so, time will tell.

But it means very little because of the number of games he's coached. Reid isn't far behind and also likely will surpass 165 losses. Again, winning percentage is more telltale for a coach on the all-timers scale. The standard of excellence is 60 percent, comparing Belichick to Fisher is misleading unless you want to contrast their win totals as well.
Halas and Shula have more games coached and not that many loses.

Very true.

It is also true that Halas and Shula coached in an era with no free agency and no salary cap. They retained the players they wanted to keep forever, with the exception of a player bolting for a new, unproven, short-lived competitor to the NFL.

Free agency and the salary cap make this an apples to oranges comparison. Consider all the players the Patriots would have never lost due to those considerations.

Maybe, unfortunately NFL records don't make those distinctions. It is what it is.

And they have higher winning percentages, which further illustrates my point.

Those guys coached 12-14 game seasons most of their careers but you won’t hear any of that stuff if Belichick gets the all-time wins record.

That would speak more to longevity than anything. Winning percentage is the most significant measure, IMO.

And what about those vets the Pats wouldn't have been able to sign as UFAs?

Halas (.682) and Shula (.677) both have higher win% than Belichick. As does Paul Brown (.672), Tony Dungy (.668), George Allen (.712), John Madden (.759), Vince Lombardi (.738), etc. Bill's win% has dropped dramatically since 2019 and continues to drop. Pretty soon the younger coaches will pass him.

Belichick .647
Andy Reid .641
McDermott .640
Tomlin .633
McCarthy .620
Payton .620
Harbaugh .618

After the 2019 regular season, the regular season winning percentage was .683. So around 10 points a season and it would not be surprising to be under .640 by the end of next season. In fact he'd need a winning record to stay above .640.

Yup, he was #1 in win% for coaches w/ >200 games, when Brady last played here. He's since dropped to #5 and Andy Reid will drop him to #6 next season. His biggest problem is that he has to win 11 games just to maintain his .647 win%.

The NFC was Dominant during Marino's career... What's more surprising to me is that Miami went to only One SB game Total during that same career.
Given that Elway won five AFC Championships, Kelly won four AFC Championships, and Marino had a coach widely regarded as one of the best ever and won just one AFC Championship (his second year), it’s baffling that people claim Marino is a top 5 all-time QB.

Wouldn't have figured Madden would be #1 in win pct.

Totally agree, however... Bill did have Brady for 20!

Mostly saying that to stir the pot, I don't think it really negates your point though :)

Until 1976, Madden was known as a great regular-season coach who couldn't win in the POs.

He should've remained being known as that after 1976 also; but I digress...

He also coached a Lot fewer games than the others.

yeah I routinely see Shula and Marino in almost everyone’s top 5 which makes no damn sense. if that’s the case then they should have at least 2 rings together. instead they made only 1 SB in a **** conference and got destroyed by 22 points in that only SB. Looking at the box score for that game, it seems like another TB-KC situation where it could have been even worse. Marino and Shula were losing by 38-16 with 21 minutes left in the game and the game ended 38-16
