The concept that Tony Dungy is such a great coach since he has always had winning records is a load of s#it. Trust me, I know; I've lived in the Tampa Bay area for twenty years. That Buc team was a constant under achiever. There were at least two, if not more, other years that those teams should have made it to the Super Bowl. The reason they did not was Dungy's overly predictable and ultra conservative play calling and game planning. Gruden won in the last window of opportunity with one of the greatest defenses in NFL history by opening up the play calling and going out and getting some offense to go with Sapp, Brooks and Lynch. Everybody in the stadium knew first down was a run to the left, second down was a run to the right, and on third and long was a pass to the near sideline close to the first down marker.
Dungy got a lot of credit for the team's success since he was the head coach, but that is not a fair and accurate assessment. Former owner Hugh Culverhouse was a cheapskate who fielded the worst team in NFL history - and at the same time was one of the most profitable owners in the NFL thanks to television reveue sharing. Once he passed away, all those high draft picks resulted in a very good team. That credit should go primarily to under appreciated director of player personnel Jerry Angelo, and also to GM Rich McKay and new owner Malclom Glazer. Dungy gets all the credit in the media but he was one of the least important pieces, after the players and the people mentioned above.
Getting the gig in Indy at that time had to be a dream come true for any coach. Even though many on this board bash him, few would contest that Bill Polian is one of the very best at what he does in the NFL. Sure the team had a losing team after the Jim Mora infamous "playoffs? Playoffs!?" meltdown, but they were 10-6 and 13-3 the two years before that. This was a very good team with Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Edgerrin James. Dungy was brought in with implicit instructions to not screw up the offense like he did in his last job, and maybe help the defense get better.
Dungy's all time winning record should be Exhibit A under "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics"
Crap, I think Jerry Glanville could have won a Super Bowl with that set up he walked in to with the Colts.
Maybe more than once.
