Look. If we sign Moss to a reasonable contract, great. If we give him $9+ million a year, that would be stupid. Really. It is agonizing waiting for news on him but let's look at the situation without our homer glasses on. I hope he comes back, but if he doesn't the New England Patriots will move forward.
--- 9 million a year would be a bargain for Randy Moss in this market.
Randy Moss is at this point in his career (in my opinion) where he should not get $9 million a year. Let's reflect back to the playoffs and the games where the opposing team did all they could to eliminate him. How did he do? Not well. In the playoffs, by design or not he was missing. The team did not steamroll through the playoffs and in fact struggled. How is that? Offensively the line broke down but Randy Moss was invisible. Nowhere to be seen.
---HE's at the point in his career...WHERE HE BROKE THE SINGLE SEASON RECEIVING TD RECORD. Reflect back on the playoffs? You mean the game where Jacksonville focused their entire defense on Moss allowing other players to be running free? How about the Super Bowl where he caught 3 passes on the final scoring drive including the go ahead TD? Maybe he wasn't great against San Diego, but you have no leg to stand on in the other games. I guess Tom Brady playing terrible against San Diego and missing Moss a couple times should mean that Brady isn't worth a big contract.
He had a tremendous year. But, the teams that certainly focused on taking him out of the game, did. What makes any of you think they will not do that again? I am sure the front office does not want to pay for a $9 million decoy. At this point, I tell him to pound sand, thanks for your service. Move on. Trade for a receiver, draft another one and use the money elsewhere.
---Teams can take any one receiver out of any game. Think Welker catching 100 plus balls was an accident? Those underneath routes were open because of the coverage Moss dictates. There are very few players who ever see the type of coverage Moss sees. There is not a similar "decoy" in the game. Teams take their chances with Owens, they take their chances with Chad Johnson...they don't take their chances with Randy Moss. There is NO PLAYER out there that would be a better use of the money.
