Look. If we sign Moss to a reasonable contract, great. If we give him $9+ million a year, that would be stupid. Really. It is agonizing waiting for news on him but let's look at the situation without our homer glasses on. I hope he comes back, but if he doesn't the New England Patriots will move forward.

--- 9 million a year would be a bargain for Randy Moss in this market.

Randy Moss is at this point in his career (in my opinion) where he should not get $9 million a year. Let's reflect back to the playoffs and the games where the opposing team did all they could to eliminate him. How did he do? Not well. In the playoffs, by design or not he was missing. The team did not steamroll through the playoffs and in fact struggled. How is that? Offensively the line broke down but Randy Moss was invisible. Nowhere to be seen.

---HE's at the point in his career...WHERE HE BROKE THE SINGLE SEASON RECEIVING TD RECORD. Reflect back on the playoffs? You mean the game where Jacksonville focused their entire defense on Moss allowing other players to be running free? How about the Super Bowl where he caught 3 passes on the final scoring drive including the go ahead TD? Maybe he wasn't great against San Diego, but you have no leg to stand on in the other games. I guess Tom Brady playing terrible against San Diego and missing Moss a couple times should mean that Brady isn't worth a big contract.

He had a tremendous year. But, the teams that certainly focused on taking him out of the game, did. What makes any of you think they will not do that again? I am sure the front office does not want to pay for a $9 million decoy. At this point, I tell him to pound sand, thanks for your service. Move on. Trade for a receiver, draft another one and use the money elsewhere.

---Teams can take any one receiver out of any game. Think Welker catching 100 plus balls was an accident? Those underneath routes were open because of the coverage Moss dictates. There are very few players who ever see the type of coverage Moss sees. There is not a similar "decoy" in the game. Teams take their chances with Owens, they take their chances with Chad Johnson...they don't take their chances with Randy Moss. There is NO PLAYER out there that would be a better use of the money.

You sound like you're whistling past the graveyard. You totally underestimate the value of Moss to this team, to Brady, to the rest of the offense.

I don't think I underestimate his value to the team and Brady. Heck, they set all kinds of records. What I am questioning is whether it will continue. Moss was not all that stellar in the playoffs. I understand he opened things up for others, but did he really? Our offense was not as dynamic when he was shut down. I am simply saying that giving a 31 year old (I am not saying he is washed up...he is top three in the game) $9+ mill for 3-4 years is not the best business decision. I truly believe there is a reason the front office has not signed him already...and it may be something that they see which is negative...

Looking at Moss' performance last season, and the history of elite receivers usually playing at a high level until at least 35, it appears that a long term contract for Moss would be wise. Of course, if the Pats cut ties, we will all have to deal with it, and assume they know better than we. 9 million for 3 years would be a steal, considering Berrian just got 16 million guaranteed, and Berrian is horse manure. 9 million for 4 years, and anything less than 20 million guaranteed seems like it would be a very friendly deal in the current climate for a player of Moss' talent. The team just paid AD 20 million guaranteed at age 30 at a position much more prone to career ending injury.

So, because another team values someone else who stinks at $9 million a year and overpays them, we are supposed to use that as a benchmark?

But, I do think there is some other reason the front office did not sign him quickly...

All the speculation is certainly pushing "spygate" and "tapegate" and Matt frickin Walsh off the front page.
