Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

Actually, there are and the Pats defense employs such schemes and strategy often in situations where giving up short completions while forcing the opposing team to buring time off the clock late in a game to protect a lead is called upon.
Acutally, that play is designed to keep the play in front of the linebackers. If the catch is made it is OK, but it isn't designed to allow the opposing team to catch the ball.

Said this, I agree that Hobbs is a player and often gets a bum rap from many Pats fans. Understand that even last season, he even lined up on the left side and went up against Harrison against the Colts. He'll get better and make more plays on the ball. I expect he'll step up to fill in for the expected departure of Asante nicely.

He is a player by definition, I am still waiting to see it on the field. He is a very good kick returner though. I am sorry, this isn't a bum rap, he had a bad year, and a terrible Super Bowl. Both he and Assante came up small in that big game. I have no faith in him filling in nicely for Assante. He may be the reason the Patriots overpay for Assante. Even if Assante stays, there will be new DB's in camp trying to take his position. If Eugene Wilson hadn't fallen off of the earth he would have been seeing time at CB. He was drafted as a CB and only went to safety when they let Lawyer go.

Time will tell, I may very well be wrong, but right now I feel pretty confident in my assessment.

Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

Is that you P. Rivers? ;)

That was just a bad pass, but he made the play and deserves credit for it. He also made the big play in the first Giant game. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut evry once in a while.
So, for football that would be "Even a bad DB intercepts a bad pass every once in a while."

Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

Just because the offense didn't do anything useful with Ellis' great INT return doesn't mean it didn't happen. Suggesting that he had a terrible Super Bowl is as far off the mark as you can get.

Saying that Might Light had a great superbowl i think is further.

Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

Why throw at Assante when you can throw on Ellis? Assante has some talent, Ellis was a young first year starter. So Assante come back this year, has a pretty good year, but most of the big time throws go Ellis' way, and a large percentage of them get caught. I don't like Ellis on the corner every play. He is small, gives the reciever too much cushion and gives up too many big plays. The Pats play a zone defense too much for a corner like Ellis. He can't out jump the reciever for the ball and doesn't seem to play close enough to the reciever to break the play up. I am pretty sure that there aren't any defenses designed to allow a reciever to catch the ball.

Ellis was put in a bad spot. He was left alone on the corner while the team blitzed. That left Ellis alone with Burress, he should have been on top of him, make Ely beat him. Instead he plays off Burress and he gets beaten. Maybe the coaching staff can be blamed, or maybe he was the best of what was left on the team, but he had a bad year. Its really a shame too, we need help on defense but he is still young. After the year he had the team will have to go looking for somebody to challenge his position. With Assante probably leaving that means need multiple new DB's in camp.

I hope I am wrong and his problems were systemic. I not a troll and the Pats are my team, but I can look at them and see the flaws. Ellis had a bad year and if there were somebody better he would have been replaced. There was a period where Randall Gay was starting, then he got hurt. But Hobbs wasn't that good all year, regardless of the scheme, or the type of defense. Belichick didn't win three Super Bowls by giving up big plays in the defensive backfield.

Patriots rarely ever play a press-man coverage. Have you ever seen an umbrella?

Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

I don't talk sh it.....but you're an idiot.

and, he knows jack **** about defense.

Hobbs plays the defense the way it is designed to be played , like the rest of the team. On most downs it is the LB's or strong safety's responsibility to cover the short routes. That's why Hobbs plays off, just as Samuel does.

If not for the last play on defence, these same idiots would be singing praises for Hobbs, who played damn well until the TD

Re: Hobbs was Banged Up

The Pats play a cover three.

Indeed, and they played more cover 3 this year than I can recall, but that's not all they play. They also play cover 2 more, a variation of cover 2 man, cover 8, nickle and dime sets that resemble cover three but are in fact not. It's all situational, and I don't even want to get into the bend but don't break philosophy given that if a Pats fans hasn't gotten it by now, chances are he or she will never get it.
That being said, I think Hobbs is best in man coverage. He has some work to do to be a better zone defender. There was one play in the SB where Manning threw a lob to the sideline towards Toomer. It should have been incomplete, but Toomer made the play on it. That shouldn't happen.

Right and Hobbs had good coverage. Only problem was, Toomer pushed off on Hobbs facemake with Hobbs head snapping back from the pushoff and Toomer gained a six inch seperation without a flag being thrown. Can't fault Hobbs on this play. That's not to say Hobbs doesn't blow plays. He does, and yet, he's still a fine CB.

Yup, defense changes their coverages depending on the situation. But is it fair to say that generally the coaching staff makes these calls with their Bend but don't break philosophy in mind?

I took my criticism of Hobbs on this play back because I watched the replay.

Again, I'll say I'm not a Hobbs basher. I'm just saying there's stuff he can do better.

No offense, but what the hell are you talking about? An INC stops the clock.

It sure is, but you knew that already. ;)

Fair enough and sorry I read your retraction after I had replied. Also, I agree that Hobbs' game can improve. There were at least a couple plays where he totally blew coverage and I had no idea what the hell he was trying to do. But the same can be said of even Ty Law during his peak days. Said this though, Hobbs is still a hell of a CB and IMO is no where near the bottom in the league as a CB as a poster had suggested.

The Globe has been getting all the team's scoop these days. Amazing how the Herald has become irrelevant to this team.

Wow, props to Hobbs for playing through all his injuries...that's a tough player

I'm also not sold on Hobbs. I don't think he's the "Sorriest corner in the league", but most of my memories of him are him falling down trying to cover, getting burned by a receiver and falling down trying to cover. Most people here seem to be in love with the guy. Whats so good about him?

Let's change the question up just a bit, if you don't mind. How often does Hobbs get "burned" when there's absolutely nobody else from the defense in the area as opposed to getting "burned" when there's help around?

Lets not change the question. As i said and i've seen all season, the guys falls down a LOT during coverage, usually, when it seems he knows he's been beat. Again, what's so good about him? I don't understand the love for the guy. If not for the safety help and belichick's defense he'd probably be worse than he is now. I'm not saying that he couldn't improve, in fact, he better or a rookie for FA(hopefully) will take his job next year. That would make me happy.
