who would you take in the draft with our second pick right now.

CB @ #12 + $8m in cap space >>>>>>>> any player at #2

I'd be willing to part with picks (if that were ever necessary) to entice a team to trade up for our pick. Call me crazy, but it's better than picking at #2 (with no particularly attractive player available).

http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2008.php

I sent an e-mail to Walt at walterfootball.com . I decided to ask why he projected us taking McFadden over Laurinaitis, as I see that to be a more likely pick. I got the following e-mail back and wanted to share (he said I could post this up.)

"I definitely considered James Laurinaitis. The thing that held me back
was the fact that Bill Belichick seldom drafts linebackers. I heard
him once say in an interview that he needs to "trust" the guys at that
position. That's why he frequently signs free-agent linebackers,
including Rosevelt Colvin and Adalius Thomas. Could he be overwhelmed
by Laurinaitis' talent? Sure - but I don't know if he would trust a
rookie. Belichick seems like a guy who wants to do something one way
and not change anything. It took him years to finally provide Tom
Brady with adequate weapons. I think he'd like some stability at the
running back position, given that Laurence Maroney hasn't been able to
stay healthy. Darren McFadden should be the pick, now that the Jets
are winning, and the Patriots are all but guaranteed the No. 2 pick
because the 49ers are horrendous."

I understand and agree with Walt's reasoning. It seems apparent BB prefers veteran experience at LB.

I have no doubts that the Pats will try their best to trade down in order to stockpile more picks for this draft and for the future. If they end up being stuck with the high pick then IMO McFadden would be the likely selection. Its a real stretch to pick a LB like "The Little Road Warrior" that high though unless he's truly the second coming of Lawrence Taylor.

I'm torn between Mcfadden and Dorsey also, but I'm leaning towards Dorsey. Our offense is already amazing. Our defense is good/very good and with the addition of Dorsey and the ability to switch between 3-4 and 4-3 at will, i think our defense could be amazing as well. Either way, McFadden, Dorsey, a Trade for more picks(present and future) and I'll be Happy!

From what I have read there are no Stud can't miss players worth a #2/3 pick so if we don't trade down I want someone on Defense.
We could use a bit more speed overall and maybe a pure passs rusher. We may be losing more players to FA on defense this year.

If the pick can't be moved, then I would lean towards taking Chris Long...

The best player available, or the best trade deal available.
I'm selfishly helping that Mcfadden is the best player available when the Patriots pick.
Pull the trigger and then we have the most dynamic offense anyone can dream up.

That's a pretty good point about running back's lifespan in the NFL relative to Brady's prime. I think Brady is in the smack dab middle of his prime. In 3 years he'll begin to decline if he hadn't started already.

38 tds and 4 ints so far. Yea Brady is looking like he has started to decline  He is having the best year of any qb ever up until this point. I can see why the fins stink so bad, Even the fans are stupid.

Saying Brady is starting to decline in ability is like saying Bill Belichick has all timers and is losing his coaching ability.
What the heck kind of comment was that?

As far as back to the discussion our O line has been playing amazing thus far.
We could always say we want to see an improvement on the run blocking.
But I wouldn't spend a top 5 pick for that.
My ideal solution would be to trade, but if we can't do that I would dfraft
Mcfadden for a few reasons.

Imagine having Brady,Moss, Mcfadden on the same field it would be ridiculously hard to find a defense that could slow that down.
You say well this defense is amazing and we haven't really needed to rely on the running game yet.
The words of Maroney almost seem haunting he said we really haven't had to run if we have to and I don't come thru then complain.
Imagine being able to run the three M's at rb's then when the defense is sucking wind with their hands on their hips.
Brady goes deep off the play action to Moss and Jackson yes I already expect Stallworth to be gone, unless he restructures drastically.
We have alot of my favorite picks one second two thirds this is the value portion in the draft and where I believe the Patriots have to go defensive back or linebacker prospect in this slot.
Now if we trade the pick we have to look at Vernon Gholston, James Lauranitis, Dan Connor, Aqua Talib, Kenny Philips, and maybe the cb on ohio state.

Again, unless the Dolphins trade down (which would be awesome because the price for the #1 pick is costly) no way Dorsey gets past them. Best player in the draft and fits the biggest need.

I hope you guys pick him ... he's perhaps #10-#20 talent ... by picking him 1st you help us get more for our pick.:D

Dont bother. Aqua is clearly insane and filled with envy. Brady will have more td passes then the phins put up in 2 years as a team.

You don't know what you're talking about. He's unquestionably a top 5 talent, probably top 2 with McFadden.

thatd be stupid. Put top 5 money into 1 of the highest paid DL already? Warren-Seymour-Green arent cheap u know

Seymour is only signed thru 2009. Drafting C. Long would make him expendable. Given Richard's injury history, Long might actually save us against the cap, in the long run.

injuries can occur to any player. you would really take a chance in Long trying to get him to be as good as Seymour?

as a top 5 pick, he would get the same money as Seymour gets now without playing a single down

Say McFadden would be available at #2. They could talk to him about signing a cheaper contract, but being favored to win a SB in his rookie season, or the Patriots could trade the pick and he could go to someone like the Falcons or Bengals. I don't think any high draft pick has ever been in this position before, and it is something to think about.

He'd have to have the worst agent in the history of agents for this to happen. In fact, his agent will never get another client if he lived to be 1000.

And why would McFadden, who's career could end on his first carry of training camp, be interested in signing a cheap contract?

If for some reason we cannot trade out of the #2 hole, and absolutely NEED to pick there, it'll be Jake Long. Mark it down. It's the safest, smartest choice.

Yes, because taking the best player available when you're "stuck" making a selection is always stupid...

It's definately a risk. But BB didn't build this team by holding on to players like McGinest and Vinatieri and Branch and Law and Milloy. There's always someone else who can do the job. The only constant is change.

And, as a top-5 pick, he would NOT be getting the same amount that Seymour is right now. Seymour is among the top-5 compensated players in the NFL, IIRC.
