Patriots Defense needs major work

Anyone who doesn't understand the human element to both football and specifically defensive football isn't worth listening to. Telling someone to play with the same intensity when they're up by 35 points isn't enough to accomplish that goal.

And you're making the obvious mistake of extrapolating from this game to other games. We know we can tackle. Did we tackle well in this game? Well, no. Does that mean we will never be able to? Hopefully not.

no you don't understand, the Dolphins without Ronnie are better than the Chargers with LT, and the Dolphins passing game with Cleo Lemon and no Chris Chambers is better than the Cowboys. I don't understand how people can be big enough Pats fans that they join a Pats fan site and don't even get the basics of the game. Please, I implore you all, STFU about the defense, you're embarrassing our fanbase.

Did anyone notice the obvious holding that was let go by the refs which allowed one TD and another big play to keep a drive alive?

You make a good point....did we tackle exceptionally well against the cowboys? Not really,.....for a split second there THEY were ahead in that game.....you never know what is going to happen in a game,....and I think we as fans are getting a little complacent, fat and happy here........You pull off some of the crap we pulled today against the Colts (who believe me will be neck and neck with us offensively) and even Pitt who has been playing tough all year......and it will be an unhappy result......My feeling is to NOT get too used to putting it in cruise control.....because it can be a bad habit to break....and it can come back to burn you......Someone said something about giving some credit to this team........credit....???? has anyone watched their games this year? This is the worst team in the NFL.......wake up guys.......

I don't think the D is as good as in years past, but the offense is obvioulsy light years ahead of anything it has ever been.

I wouldn't mind criticism of the D, but geez, some people complaining sound so angry. Calm down people.

Would you stop with the Colts crap? Do you really think the defense is going to play as vanilla as they did in the second half today against the Colts? You really think they aren't going to be on their "A" game? If the Colts beat us, they beat us, but it won't be because our defense was playing the same way as it did in the second half of a what was to that point a 42-7 blowout.

Don't even mention that to the sky-is-falling crowd. The defense is obviously crap, that holding wasn't even needed by the Dolphins to complete their miraculous comeback that only fell three touchdowns short.

It's the frigging 7th week of the season and the defense has steadily gotten WORSE. Belichick didn't have time to focus on getting them to improve before now? Defense stinks because they lack speed, sure tacklers and real talent beyond the Dline and apparently Belichick's "schemes" cannot hide those deficiencies any more.

Thank you.... before this post, I wasn't sure who'd take the title of "biggest idiot of the day." There had been a 3 way battle for the crown, but this post clearly gives you the win.

If you wanna crown his ass, then crown him, but he is who we thought he was, and they are who we thought they were.

Yup, AT and Asante suck.

I don't think AT is playing particularly well, although I could be wrong. However, whenever the camera is on him, I do see him overruning his gap and giving the RB a lane to run or not being able to get off his blocks. While Samuel has been our BEST DB in the secondary, his play has been average at best. He's a below average tackler and I expect my "shut down, top 5" corner to be able to play up on his man and not give him a first down cushion.

See, this is why you make no sense. You're evaluating the defense by what they're doing in progressively bigger and bigger blowouts. Let's see what they do in an actual close game before you start whining.

Actually, you don't have to be in a "close game" to evaluate the play of the defense. Missed tackles are MISSED TACKLES. Poor fundamental play by the linebacks isn't dependent on the score. I highly doubt Belichick says "well guys, if it's a blowout, it's okay to miss tackles, and play poor technique and overrun lanes and stand like a statue while a receiver catches a ball right in front of you". Allowing TDS is allowing TDS. You would have a point if the complaint was solely about how many yards/points were allowed but the complaint is about the MANNER OF PLAY of the defense. They are NOT PLAYING WELL and the only reason we won this game is because we have a good offense, played against a POOR defense and faced a POOR offense. The latter two facts won't exist in the playoffs.

And what's happened when the team has absolutely had to make a stop? They've done it. Against the Chargers after the fumble on the kickoff. Against the Cowboys the ENTIRE SECOND HALF AFTER THEY TOOK THE LEAD. The first half of this game. Besides a few series the whole season, they have not been put under duress to make a big stop, but when they have they've pulled it off. Perspective is important when evaluating this defense.

People on this board are getting ridiculous.

The first half of this game, the Pats D didn't get any stops, rather the Dolphins offense shot themselves in the foot. Ronnie Brown running at will, to the tune of 16 yards on 3 carries, then Cameron calls a dumb pitch out which costs them 3 yards. Then Cleo drops the ball. The Pats D didn't do a damn thing to make those things happen.

Then, with 3 qtrs still left, the D proceeds to make a "stop" by allowing the Dolphins 80 yards and a TD. Yeah, real nice "stop"

"Perspective" is something that homers like you obviously lack and you're not much better at spinning.

Its official people are idiots! Defense plays great in the first half and then come out flat, up 42-7 and give up 2 TD's and they are terrible yup! How will we ever win another game????

Again, please provide an excuse for the atrocious D in the first half where the only "stops" came courtesy of Cleo Lemon missing wide open receivers.

Actually, we have been tackling poorly since after the San Diego game and the defense has been playing increasingly worse since then as well. This isn't a one game complaint, this complaint stems from the poor play since the San Diego game.

You make a good point....did we tackle exceptionally well against the cowboys? It's a waste of time trying to explain anything to these homers. Many of these same people insisted that Biesel was fine as a LB up until he was cut. And they will continue to insist that the defense is fine up until we lose our first playoff game. I'm pretty sure they'll come up with the typical excuses if the defense costs us a game in the regular season.

I wouldn't mind criticism of the D, but geez, some people complaining sound so angry. Calm down people.

Right...the people who are complaining are the ones calling others ******s and using profanity..

Bill's take
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Comments from Bill Belichick's post-game press conference:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/

Opening statement
"Well, it was a good win today. I thought our team played well offensively, especially. We moved the ball and scored a lot of points. It's something we haven't done very much of down here, so it's good to feel that and experience that. Things tightened up there a little bit at the end, but we had a nice drive there, hit Wes [Welker] on that last touchdown, and I felt like we needed that. We didn't tackle very well defensively all day, particularly in the second half. A lot less than impressive. But overall, when you score those kind of points, you have a chance. The guys did a real good job offensively."

Doesn't sound like Bill was happy about the defensive effort in the second half.

realax have a beer there d is fine and BB woundnt be happy if they only let up 6 points thats what makes him a great coach he can always find room for improvment...The few times they needed a big play this year from the defense they came up with the stop...Its crazy that people are *****ing about this team...

He didn't sound like he cared all that much. Basically a "this was a preseason game, the starters did well in the second half and then we cruised through the first half and they never had a chance."

The Patriots beat an undefeated team last week and played hugely well against the Chargers in the second week of the season. Their defense is one of the best in the league. Give it a rest, Chicken Littles.

Yeah, the Pats had nothing to do with stopping Brown on that pitch out, or the pressure on Lemon that made him fumble. Nope, all the fault of the Dolphins. You are a moron, and besides your little friend, everyone in this thread agrees.

If the Pats defense was as bad as you make it out to be, there would not have been a 35 point lead in the first half. Period. I'm sick of this crap.

If you wanna crown his ass, then crown him, but he is who we thought he was, and they are who we thought they were.

Best post of the thread. About sums it up.

The most embarassing aspect of this 7-0 team is a very small but excessively vocal segment of it's fan base. Unfortunately for us they tend to post here.

Patriots Defense needs major work.I love the offense but the defense is awful

Sorry spinb it any way you want it the D is terrible....

I give up. Idiots rule this board at the moment.

Not to worry Richter! There are fans here who really don't understand the game and PatsRule is one of them. Also keep in mind that we'll have many new members joining our site with Patriots fan "covers" who are actually fans of other teams. In other words, they won't really be Pats fans, but Trolls pissed off that we're on top of the world right now.

Hey PatsRule, are you LOVING the classic "EFF-YOU!" touchdown we're scoring every game like the rest of us? C'mon, share you're unbridled enjoyment with us.

If he really is a Pats fan and he thinks our D isn't good, then sadly, we'll have to educate him on why he's wrong. We have the #3 defense in all of football and if we weren't scoring 40 points a game, it would be #1. Maybe he doesn't understand the logic here.

the defense is awful

21 points given up with no bad starting field position, and handing good field position once to your offense? That's a slightly weak result, but it's not "awful".

If you want to say "Yes, but Miami's a bad team", then you also have to say Miami was motivated and kept trying, Miami was at home, the Pats were in Prevent, etc.

Do you ****ing ******s watch the same game as the rest of us?

Our defense stopped playing at the half......... to avoid injury. I hate stupid fans.

Exactly! Also…Richard Seymour’s return will solidify everything. Relax Pats fans..... enjoy the blow-out win.

Your a ******* idiot(don't care). Yeah they are awful except prior to the game they were the 2nd best defense or something like that.
